Melodies for Millions was an entertainment program on ZDF . All issues were moderated by Dieter Thomas Heck and ran irregularly from 1985 to 2007 in the main evening program of the Mainz television station. The show was produced in large halls in front of an audience in Germany .
content
Using editorial research and audience letters, emotional stories were selected and retold in conversation with those involved. The team had often found missing relatives or acquaintances and invited surprise guests. A replica coffee house in the old German style with a revolving door, wood paneling and round marble tables served as the backdrop. Extras in classic waitress clothing took care of the catering. Monika Sundermann , already known to ZDF viewers from Dalli Dalli , assisted in later episodes .
The guests mostly associated musical memories with the stories they experienced. The original artists then performed the respective title on full playback. These were either hits, English-language oldies, popular titles or music from operas and operettas. In each show she also illustrated a well-known orchestra and a television ballet around the performer. Some of the music recordings even re-recorded the orchestra and performer beforehand. The record company Ariola , later Sony Music , released this on several sound carriers.
Charitable commitment
From the sale of the sound carriers, a portion of each long-playing record, music cassette or compact disc went to a charitable organization. From 1994 onwards, the ZDF also collected audience donations for the German Cancer Aid during the shows . For the 2007 final, 4.1 million euros were raised in donations. According to press information from the organization, a total of around 50 million euros has been collected for the charitable cause in the 13 years since 1994.
The End
With the last issue on November 18, 2007, the station stopped the series of shows. At the same time, Dieter Thomas Heck announced the end of his active TV career as a presenter. On November 2, 2008, Carmen Nebel continued Heck's commitment hand in hand with the ZDF donation gala . Since 2009, her ZDF show Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel has been broadcast once a year for the benefit of the German Cancer Aid.
Repetitions
From February 2015, the show series was repeated for the first time every Monday at 8:15 p.m. on ZDFkultur, 30 years after it was first broadcast, with the exception of episode 12, with a few interruptions until the station was closed in September 2016.
Trivia
- Mildred Scheel , the then patron of the German Cancer Aid, was a guest in the first edition of the series. She died of cancer three months after it was broadcast.
- The hit / chanson singer and actress Dalida had her last German TV appearance in Melodies for Millions . The recording aired posthumously on November 7, 1987 after her suicide in May 1987.
- After the audience success, mainly due to the surprise stories, Rudi Carrell started his Saturday evening show for ARD in 1988 with the nickname Let yourself be surprised . Among other things, it also contained the amalgamation of lost friends and relatives. Compared to the ZDF version, however, the viewers did not apply themselves, but were usually invited to the WDR studio under a pretext .
- Olli Dittrich and Wigald Boning released one of their albums as a comedy duo Die Doofen in 1996 under the title “Melodies for Melons” based on the show. The fun metal band JBO renamed their title “Instrumental Medley I & II” to “Melodies for Melons”.
- Ragnhild Heck, the presenter's wife and manager, was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2007. The disease was also officially considered a reason for Heck's departure from TV. After successful treatment, she described her experiences in the last edition of the show.
- Independently of the series, the House of History in Bonn organized a temporary exhibition on the history of German hits including an accompanying book from May 9 to October 5, 2008 under the title “Melodies for millions. The century of hits ”.
Publications
The CD series has been reissued by Sony Music since 2011 in a different composition with artist specials, but without donations. Three best-of DVDs were also released, individually or as a box set, with various music performances from the original shows.
