history

The choir was founded as the Ahlen Children's Choir by Dietmar Hahn on November 18, 1948. The first tape recording took place in 1951 in the Ahlen town hall. In 1957 the choir was officially named "Ahlen Children's and Youth Choir". This was followed by qualification as a radio choir for the WDR . The first direct broadcast was broadcast on September 25, 1960 from Schellenberg Castle . A total of 15 additional programs were then produced for WDR.

In 1963 the choir made its first television appearance as the "Westphalian Nightingales". At the “International Children's and Youth Choir Competition” in a competition against 102 other choirs, he came first. Between 1971 and 1980 another 17 programs were produced for WDR. The choir went on the first tour of Germany with Heino and visited Homberg, Dieburg , Böblingen , Pirmasens , Gießen and Brilon . And later there was a solo tour to Siegen , Körbecke and Berlin . He received the Hermann Löns Medal in 1975 and gave several concerts in the towns of Ahlen, Bad Pyrmont , Bad Meinberg and Bad Salzuflen in the 1970s . In 1985 he had an appearance for the marketplace inauguration in Ahlen.

The founder of the choir, Dietmar Hahn, retired early on February 1st, 1987 and was able to devote himself entirely to the direction of the choir. The choir gave a total of 21 guest performance concerts in the first half of 1988. In 1990 Dietmar Hahn gave up the leadership of the choir and the former choir director's farewell concert followed on December 15th.

In 1991 Reiner Jenkel became the new choirmaster. In 1995 the choir embarked on a new tour with Günter Wewel . In 1998 the choir celebrated its 50th anniversary. In the same year the founder of the choir Dietmar Hahn died. Since May 2005 Stefan Schoenefeldt has led the choir. Then in February 2008 Andreas Blechmann took over the temporary musical direction of the choir until in April 2008 Martina Schröer, a choir director, was hired. In 2008 the choir celebrated its 60th anniversary with a jubilee concert in their hometown of Ahlen, together with the Dietmar Hahn Choir, which consists of former "nightingales". At the end of August 2010, Schröer had to give up her conducting with the Westphalian Nightingales for health reasons, which Ines Schreiner from Münster took over.

Sebastian Wewer has led the choir since October 2013. He wanted to revive Dietmar Hahn's songs and bring the choir to where the choir once stood. After the resignation of the choir director for health reasons in the same year, the choir was dissolved.
