history
On April 1, 1962, ballet master and dance soloist Günter Jätzlau laid the foundation stone for the television ballet on behalf of the GDR's German television station. At first eight dancers were engaged, by 1967 the ensemble increased to twenty members. Guest choreographers determined the further development alongside the existing management team.
Walter Schumann, previously a soloist and choreographer at the Friedrichstadtpalast Berlin, from 1967 promoted other dancers such as Emöke Pöstenyi and Susan Baker , who performed many soloists (based on the Kessler twins from West Germany ). In addition, a larger ballet hall was put into operation during this time , music and ballet masters and costume designers were hired, and a new production studio for the ensemble's costumes was created.
After 1975 the former soloists of the television ballet, Ferenc Salmayer and Emöke Pöstenyi, now designed a new profile for the dance ensemble as choreographers. In Ein Kessel Buntes , the Saturday evening show on GDR television, they regularly danced alongside national and international stars. From 1982 onwards, new soloists such as Ophelia Vilarova and Maik Damboldt took their place, and they were well recognized by the audience. In 1989 André Höhl was hired for the ballet.
After the collapse of the GDR in 1990, the continued existence of the TV ballet of GDR television was initially unclear. When the Telestar was awarded, Emöke Pöstenyi made an appeal to those responsible from the entertainment industry, which sparked discussions. At the end of December 1991, shortly before the shutdown of GDR television on December 31 of that year, the television director of the newly founded MDR television offered to keep the television ballet and connect it to its ARD station. A stroke of luck was the commitment of other shareholders who wanted to participate financially in the ballet.

The dance ensemble appeared increasingly in the shows of the MDR, followed by some engagements on the part of private television.
