Frank Schöbel (actually Frank-Lothar Schöbel ; born December 11, 1942 in Leipzig ) is a German musician . He is one of the most successful pop singers in the GDR .

Life and Musician Career

Schöbel was the second son of the opera singer Käthe Brinkmann . His musical talent was discovered early on. As a seven year old he attended the preparatory course for the St. Thomas' Choir . But instead of joining the choir, he was more interested in pop music. He completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic and began his musical career in the Erich Weinert Ensemble of the National People's Army (NVA). In the 1960s, Schöbel started his career as a musician in the GDR, but also appeared as a presenter and entertainer in television shows and played in DEFA films. Twice he won along with his then-wife Chris Doerk the Song Contest of the GDR , 1967 Love me as your heart like it and in 1969 with the evening in the city.

In 1971 he had his first big success in Germany with Wie ein Stern . The East German record label Amiga sold 400,000, the West German Philips label over 150,000 singles . That was enough for 37th place in the single charts in the Federal Republic of Germany , where Wie ein Stern was able to last for five weeks. Schöbel was then invited to the program Musik aus Studio B by the NDR and was the first GDR pop singer to appear in the Federal Republic of Germany. In May 1989 he achieved another success when the title We don't need any more lies reached position 80 in the German airplay charts .

Schöbel appeared at the opening ceremony of the 1974 World Cup in the Federal Republic of Germany as a representative of the GDR in the Frankfurt Waldstadion .

In 1975 Schöbel sang together with his colleague Aurora Lacasa on the Ernst-Thälmann-Insel, which belongs to Cuba , the song Insel in the Gulf of Cazones , composed for the GDR television show “Unterwegs mit Musik - Kuba” - first broadcast on December 13, 1975 .

His 1975 album, Come on, let's paint a sun , is very popular , including a song about Tokei-ihto . He recorded the title song Come on, we paint a sun again in 2005, together with citizen Lars Dietrich and Star Search winner Daniel.

In the 2006 Oscar- winning film The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck , Frank Schöbel's song Wie ein Stern is played as background music in a scene in an East Berlin restaurant, to the popular music scene of the time - the film scene plays 1984 - characterize. In Heiner Carow's 1989 film Coming Out , Frank Schöbel's songs Like a Star and Gold in Your Eyes are played in a scene in the pub 'Zum Burgfrieden'.

Together with Aurora and their two daughters, he recorded the LP Christmas in Family in 1985 , the best-selling album in GDR history.

In mid-January 2011, a single was released with the title Hautnah und Sehnsucht nach Heim . Every year Frank Schöbel goes on a big Christmas tour through East Germany.

Private

Frank Schöbel was married to the pop singer Chris Doerk . This marriage, which was divorced again, produced a son. From the 1970s he lived with Aurora Lacasa . The two daughters Dominique and Odette emerged from this relationship . Dominique is also successful as a singer. Schöbel was never married to Aurora Lacasa. They separated in 1996. In 2002 Schöbel's daughter Liv Cosma was born.

Schöbel lives in Berlin- Mahlsdorf and has set up a small recording studio there. He plays in the over-70 soccer team of BSV Eintracht Mahlsdorf.
