Music from Studio B was a 45-minute show for German hits on the NDR in the first television program . The series is primarily associated with the names Chris Howland , moderation, and Sigmar Börner , editing and directing, and ran from 1961 to 1976, usually on weekdays at 9:00 p.m.

From 1980 there was a radio broadcast of the same name on NDR 2, initiated by the innovative head of entertainment Henri Regnier . In 69 episodes up to August 1983, the Howland / Börner team presented memories, music recordings from television programs that never appeared on records, international stars, new recordings and almost always a studio guest.

    Chris Howland

Chris Howland made radio broadcasts in Germany and television for Granada Television in England. It so happened that on May 5, 1961, he presented one of a total of four preliminary rounds of the 1961 German Schlager Festival for the NDR. This festival took place in Baden-Baden, with the individual broadcasters sending singers who were determined with a preliminary selection. The presentation was so well received that Howland was then selected for a new series with which the German hit should come on television. His preoccupation for the next nine years was so music from Studio B .

    Sigmar Börner

Sigmar Börner began his television career in 1958 with the Sender Freies Berlin . In 1961 he moved to NDR in Hamburg and began that same year with music from Studio B, for which he was to produce two to three episodes as a director and editor. The great popularity with the public made it nine years.

    Naming

Those involved couldn't think of a prominent title for the show, so Chris Howland asked where the show was taking place and then suggested choosing Studio B as the program title. Because you should refer to the title but what it was in the show, we finally agreed on music from Studio B . The first episode officially broadcast under this title was then broadcast on October 22, 1961 on the German television station . Previously , as already mentioned, on May 5, 1961 , the North German Broadcasting Corporation produced one of four preliminary TV decisions for the 1961 German Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden, which took place for the first time in the same year .

    concept

As the German hit became increasingly important on the radio, there was fear of losing touch with television. Then Alexis Neve and Harald Vock , the heads of entertainment on NDR television, wanted to bring the disc jockey, as he was known from radio, onto television. The recipe for the compilation and the design of the program were given to Sigmar Börner . What was new about the series was the close cooperation with the private record industry , which was perceived as problematic with regard to the independence of the public broadcasters , but ultimately worked without any problems.

The program ran live or recorded and began with the theme song Melody Fair by Robert Farnon . The performing artists sang playback , almost exclusively in German. Exceptions were Sonny and Cher , The Lords , The Supremes , The Bee Gees , Golden Gate Quartet and Nancy Sinatra . All performers met in Studio B.

Many artists had their first television appearances there. Sometimes she had Börner sing in a duet and only then were successful records produced in this coupling, for example with Esther Ofarim and Abi Ofarim as well as with Gitte Haenning and Rex Gildo .

There was the first singing Hamburg television ballet choreographed by Anni Peterka for which Hans Blum rearranged well-known hits or produced new music titles especially for them. Howland brought the transitions in his unmistakable manner and with his distinctive voice. Another attraction of the show was the well-dosed mixture of improvisation and meticulous preparation.

Music from Studio B was initially a broadcast without an audience. The first editions came from the eponymous Studio B of the NDR television center in Hamburg-Lokstedt . Then you went to a studio in Hamburg-Wandsbek . For the 32nd broadcast, which was broadcast live from the radio exhibition in 1965 from the Killesberg exhibition center in Stuttgart , music from Studio B took place for the first time as a large television show in front of an audience. This variant was retained: from then on, music from Studio B was produced in the large broadcasting hall of the NDR broadcasting house in Hanover until February 1974. Until the series was finally discontinued in 1976, music from Studio B was broadcast as a pure pre-recorded studio production without an audience from the studios of the NDR television center in Hamburg-Lokstedt. The 97th and last edition was shown on September 20, 1976 in the ARD program.

    The departure of Chris Howland

    NDR broadcast band

The more popular the series became (it was mostly in position 1 in the ratings of Infratest and was the most popular German hit show in the 1960s), the greater the differences became. The tensions between the editor and director Sigmar Börner and Howland on the one hand, and Vock and his close colleagues on the other, peaked in 1968. Howland eventually saw no way to do a happy show in the long run and let his contract expire. Even lack of understanding in the press and massive public protests did not change the head of the department. Howland's last show ran with the 59th episode after almost a full nine years on August 26, 1969 on the screens.

Harald Vock, the head of NDR television entertainment at the time, had all recordings and thus a piece of television history deleted. All that remained was the 50th broadcast of January 22, 1968, which, following his instructions, had to be cast not as a show as usual, but as an atypical slap broadcast. He also canceled the educational gag shortly before the start of the broadcast. Only very few excerpts have survived from the other issues, which were copied for other programs. Some original 38 cm / s music tapes (from 1965/1966) are now stored in the Bielefeld media archive . Sigmar Börner made some private tape recordings available to WDR (source: “ WDR 4 Schallplattenbar ” from August 11, 2013, where some recordings were broadcast).

    New beginning

However, the high popularity of the television series forced those responsible to continue the broadcast just a month later on September 2, 1969 with the 60th episode of the International Radio Exhibition (IFA) in Stuttgart, initially with Peter Fröhlich as the presenter. After five episodes, however, there was the separation from him and the previous creator of Studio B, Sigmar Börner. Now NDR Henning Venske offered the program and he presented it for the first time on October 18, 1971. After he said in an interview with ZDF that it was a show for stupid people, his time ended after three years with the issue of 11. November 1974.

From then on there was a changing moderation , among others by Lisa Fitz , the French woman France Brifaut, Hanni Vanhaiden and Katja Ebstein . Up until the very last broadcast on September 20, 1976, the audience ratings had dropped year after year, which is why the series was subsequently discontinued, almost unnoticed by the general public.

The follow-up program was MOT (Music On Top) on November 15, 1976 , although it was discontinued after a total of eleven programs because ARD had only eight million Schlager friends back then.

According to information from the archive service there (information status 2014), only 19 of the 97 episodes of the series “Music from Studio B” that were originally produced have survived in the archive of Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in Hamburg. These are the recordings of episodes 50, 60, 65, 80 to 85, 87 to 95 and 97. The MAZ material from episode 86 is also still available in the archive. However, it has consistently serious picture and sound deficiencies, so that it is unfortunately no longer broadcast or can be copied.
