Downtown (song)

Downtown is a pop song from 1964.

It was written by Tony Hatch and sung by Petula Clark became a worldwide hit. The song became a number one hit in Germany and stayed in the charts for twelve weeks. It reached first place on the Billboard Hot 100 , was awarded a Grammy for "Best Rock and Roll Song" in 1965, and received a gold record for more than one million copies sold in the United States . In 2003 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame .

The song was covered many times, so u. a. by Ina Martell , Astrid Breck, the group Wind , Frank Sinatra , Dolly Parton , Marianne Faithfull , The B-52’s , Billy Preston , Emma Bunton and the Osmond Brothers.
