history

The Englishman Jimmy Duncombe from the county of Middlesex came to Hamburg in 1961 and played as a guitarist a. a. with Tony Sheridan . Later he had his own bands under different names. After The Continentals recorded some demo recordings in 1963, they went to England, where, with the support of Jimmie's mother, they got a record deal with Parlophone / EMI, which also had the Beatles under contract. The single Young Woman / Black Eyes , released in 1963 under the band name "Purple Hearts", had little success. In 1964 they appeared as the opening act for the Beatles. Her recording My Soul hit the charts in Germany. Now, under the name “The Rackets”, they appeared on German television shows such as Chris Howland's Music from Studio B and the ZDF turntable and became popular in German-speaking Europe. In 1965 they reached number 1 in the German charts with Skinny Minnie and stayed there for 32 weeks. They toured with the Rolling Stones, the Kinks and the Who . The fame lasted for a few more years and the band relocated to Switzerland before officially breaking up in 1969.
