Mariska Veres

Mariska Veres (born October 1, 1947 in The Hague ; † December 2, 2006 there ) was a Dutch singer.

She was the daughter of the Hungarian violinist Lajos Veres (1912–1981), who came from the Roma people and was present on the Hungarian radio for years before 1938 with his gypsy band Lajos Veres . Her mother was born in Germany and of French-Russian origin.

Veres' musical career began in 1964 as a singer in the group Les Mysteres . From 1968 on she appeared as the singer of the rock band Shocking Blue , which also had several hits in Germany, such as Send Me a Postcard (1968), the often-covered Venus (1969), Mighty Joe (1969) and Never Marry a Railroad Man ( 1970). The musicians of Shocking Blue separated in 1974; until the band reunited in 1984, Veres performed solo. From 1993 she also performed with the Shocking Jazz Quintet .

In 2006 Mariska Veres died of complications from cancer .
