John Lester Nash Jr. (born August 19, 1940 in Houston , Texas ), better known as Johnny Nash , is an American pop and reggae musician and actor .
Life
Johnny Nash began as a pop singer already in the 1950s and reached its version of Doris Day -title A Very Special Love 1958, the US Billboard charts. He was also successful as an actor from a young age and played leading roles in the films Take a Giant Step (1959) and Key Witness (1960).
He had his first big and worldwide hit parade on his own JAD label in 1968 with Hold Me Tight , which was followed by other hits, especially in Great Britain : You Got Soul and Sam Cookes Cupid . In the early 1970s he gave up his record label and signed a contract with CBS Records . In the "Harry J Studio" in Kingston / Jamaica he met Bob Marley , who was still largely unknown outside of Jamaica and gave him one of his songs: Stir It Up . With this on the CBS Sublabel Epic released reggae song can Nash in 1972 entered the British singles chart again. Nash has also recorded other songs written by Marley, such as Reggae on Broadway , Guava Jelly and Mellow Mood, and he supported Marley in his early international career.
In 1971 Nash was also seen as an actor in the Swedish romance Vill så gärna tro as composer Robert. His biggest hit in the US was I Can See Clearly Now in 1972 , which he wrote himself. In the version by Jimmy Cliff , the song was also successful in late 1993 / early 1994. In 1975 Johnny Nash had another number one hit in Great Britain with the song Tears on My Pillow, written by Ernie Smith .
