Oliver Bendt , actually Jörg Knoch (born October 29, 1946 in Potsdam ), is a German singer and actor .

Life

Jörg Knoch grew up as the son of an actress in Munich , where he played in children's roles in various films, including Königswalzer (1955) and Because you are poor, you must die earlier (1956). For this he received his first violin, piano and guitar lessons.

He became a member of the Regensburger Domspatzen , where he received a vocal training, and completed a vocal course at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . In 1967 he applied to Ralf Arnie Musikverlag as a young singer and recorded a total of four single records under the name "Jörg" in 1967 and 1968. The titles produced by Klaus Lorenzen were, among other things, you should be my last love , Mariangela , being true is not difficult with you , today you have to decide , try again with me . At the same time he sang in the German production of the musical Hair .

He later called himself Oliver Bendt and had greater success with cover versions of English hits, including:

  • What I did I did only for Maria
  • I'm coming back to Amarillo
  • My song for Maria
  • Oh, Marie

In the late 1970s he lived for some time on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia . This is where the idea for the Goombay Dance Band arose , which brought him his greatest successes in 1979/1980. The biggest success in Germany was the song Sun of Jamaica . The single was sold over ten million times. Internationally, it was surpassed by Seven Tears (1982), the title was in the UK for twelve weeks in the charts, three weeks of which at number one. He then toured with the Goombay Dance Band until the end of 2016, when he retired shortly after his 70th birthday.

Oliver Bendt lives with his family in Norderstedt near Hamburg .
