Ochsenzoll ( Low German Ossentoll) is the name of a residential and business district of undefined size on the border between the cities of Hamburg and Norderstedt . The customs border between Hamburg and Holstein used to be here . The Hamburg part belongs to the Langenhorn district . The borderline follows, among other things, the Tarpenbek brook .

history

Memorial plaque on the ox toll

From the 15th to the early 19th century, oxen were driven over a branch of the Ochsenweg through the Harksheider Moor, which until then had formed the largest moor and heather landscape in Holstein. The oxen had to be cleared at the border to the imperial city of Hamburg. Customs were paid in Garstedt until 1840 , then in a customs station in Harksheide (today in Norderstedt). Street names such as “ Schmuggelstieg ” and “Am Ochsenzoll” nearby still remind of this today. Customs was on a branch of the ox path.

The customs barriers on Hamburg's borders did not come down until 1888, when Hamburg joined the German Customs Union. Although the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg had belonged to the German Empire since its founding, it initially remained a foreign country.

Name usage

Entrance to the Asklepios Clinic North, Ochsenzoll division, on Langenhorner Chaussee

The Hamburg part of Ochsenzoll is roughly the area from the hospital to the state border, following the streets Am Ochsenzoll and Stockflethweg to the east. The part belonging to the Norderstedt districts of Garstedt and Harksheide in the Ohechaussee / Schmuggelstieg / Am Tarpenufer area with its shops is also known as "Ochsenzoll". The only weekly market in Germany takes place here, which not only crosses a city border (Hamburg and Norderstedt), but also a state border (Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein). Cross-national festivities such as the so-called "Ochsenmarkt" also take place in this quarter.

“Ochsenzoll” is also a synonym for the predominantly psychiatric clinic on Langenhorner Chaussee, which has been part of the Asklepios Klinik Nord together with the former AK Heidberg for several years .

Ochsenzoll station

In the quarter at Langenhorner Chaussee Also the "Ochsenzolle" station is the subway - U1 from Norderstedt to Hamburg and a smaller bus station, the various city and regional bus (inter alia by.. Bad Segeberg starting). From 1953 to 1967 the Alsternordbahn ended here - on the west side of Langenhorner Chaussee - and on the other side, north of the underground station, was the Ochsenzoll freight station , from which the general cargo was distributed by the rolling company (rail freight forwarder ) Fritz Gieseler from Langenhorn .

Buildings

Hospital water tower (built in 1913)
  • The house of the Danish customs officer has been preserved on Segeberger Chaussee on today's Norderstedter side, a plaque indicates this.
  • The Catholic St. Anne's Church (built in 1949) is located on the Schmuggelstieg. The building could not be used for church services in 2009 due to its roof, which was in danger of collapsing, but has since been renovated.
  • The "Bärenhof", a historicizing (neo-romantic) building ensemble of the realtor Emil Römling on Langenhorner Chaussee that was built around 1890, today belongs to a neighboring car dealership that has been trying to demolish the building for several years. The citizens' initiative Rettet den Bärenhof of the Willi Bredel Society tried to prevent this. Beginning in April 2010, the buildings were completely demolished. In autumn 2013, construction work began on the largest Audi terminal in northern Germany on Stockflethweg. 5,100 m² of retail space was created here for 35 million euros.
  • Many buildings of the former AK Ochsenzoll are under monument protection. The clinic's water tower is an outstanding example .
  • The wind turbine manufacturer Nordex SE has had its company headquarters on part of the former premises of the Ochsenzoll hospital since the beginning of 2011. Another part is used for residential construction.
  • At the intersection of Langenhorner Chaussee / Segeberger Chaussee / Schleswig-Holstein-Straße, the expansion for the so-called “Ochsenzoll node” of the B 432 began in 2009 . Among other things, a 70 meter long road tunnel was built under Segeberger Chaussee and a two-lane roundabout with a diameter of 45 meters above it, as well as an additional 28 meter long pedestrian tunnel.
