Bernhard Nermerich (born March 11, 1939 in Frankfurt am Main , † July 14, 2010 in Kelkheim (Taunus) ) was a German athlete and Olympic participant.

Life

Nermerich began his sporting career at TG Höchst and had been a member of Eintracht Frankfurt since 1960 . In 1963 Nermerich won his first German championship title in the team competition in both 20 km and 50 km walking ; In 1964 he also won the individual classification for the first time over 50 kilometers. In 1966 Nermerich finished 15th at the European Championships on the long route . At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , Nermerich was five minutes behind the eventual Olympic champion Christoph Höhne from the GDR and two and a half minutes before the Hungarian Antal Kiss in second place at the 40-kilometer mark , but was disqualified after 43 kilometers.

After Nermerich could not take part in the European Championships in 1969 because of the German boycott, he achieved his best international placement in 1971 at the European Championships in Helsinki , where he finished sixth in 4: 11: 44.0 h; but he was only the fourth-best German in this competition, as Christoph Höhne, Peter Selzer and Winfried Skotnicki were three walkers from the GDR in front of him. In 1972 the balance of power changed; In May, Bernd Kannenberg set a new world record in Bremen, behind which Bernhard Nermerich broke the four-hour mark for the first time. While Kannenberg was Olympic champion in 1972, Nermerich had to break off his career after a serious injury before the Olympic Games.

After his sporting career, the trained printing clerk founded a taxi company in Frankfurt, and in the 1990s he was voted “the friendliest taxi driver in Frankfurt”. Nermerich illuminated his house in Kelkheim every year at Christmas time with 88,888 light bulbs and other Christmas decorations, whereby he and his wife needed eleven weeks to set up all the decorations. At Easter Nermerich decorated his house with 2,222 Easter eggs. Nermerich passed on the donations that he collected from visitors to the Christmas and Easter houses for charitable purposes.
