Christa Merten

Christa Merten , née Christa Basche (born October 14, 1944 in Dobbertin , Parchim district ; † July 1, 1986 in Marbella , Spain ), was a German athlete and Olympic participant who - starting for the Federal Republic - in the 1960s and 1970s as 800 , 1500 , 3000 meter runner and was successful in cross country .

On July 31, 1971, she set a world record in Lübeck with Ellen Tittel , Sylvia Schenk and Hildegard Falck in the 4 x 800 meter relay. Merten started at the 1972 Olympic Games in the 1,500-meter run and at the European Championships in 1971 in the 800-meter run, without reaching the finals. At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1970 , she won the silver medal with the relay in the 1-2-3-4 round run with Elfgard Schittenhelm , Heidi Gerhard and Jutta von Haase with a time of 5: 01.1 minutes . At the European Indoor Championships in 1972 she reached fourth place over 800 meters.

She won German championships in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966 with the 3 × 800 m relay of VfL Wolfsburg, in 1970 in the short-distance cross-country run, in 1965, 1966 and 1970 with the cross-country team and in 1973 in the 3000-meter run (9: 23.0 min ). From 1970 to 1973 she set four German records for the Federal Republic in the 1000, 1500 and 3000 meter races.

Christa Merten was 1.68 m tall and weighed 54 kg when she was an active athlete. It belonged to the sports club SC Charlottenburg until 1964 , then to VfL Wolfsburg , then to ASV Köln and finally from 1971 to Bayer 04 Leverkusen .
