Johann Samuel Petri (born November 1, 1738 in Sorau , † April 12, 1808 in Budissin ) was a German composer, educator, cantor and author.

Life

The second son of the Sorau cantor Balthasar Abraham Petri (* 1704 in Sorau; † 1798 in Benau) and his wife Johanna Dorothea, b. Meusel, attended the grammar school in Sorau. After he had already learned to play the piano himself, Petri received organ lessons from the Sorau organist from 1753. His teacher died in 1754 and Petri became vicarius at the parish church and palace chapel at the age of 16 and held the organist function until 1755 during the vacancy.

In 1755 Petri began studying at the University of Leipzig , where he refrained from all musical activities at the behest of his father. After moving to the Halle Pedagogy, his musical talent was noticed in 1762 and he met Wilhelm Friedemann Bach , who introduced him to the previously unknown subtleties of the scores of Georg Philipp Telemann , Johann Adolph Hasse and Johann Gottlieb Graun .

After completing his studies, he worked as a signatory and teacher in Lauban from 1763, and in 1765 he was appointed cantor. In 1770 he was appointed cantor, music director and high school teacher at the high school in Budissin .

On June 11, 1771, Petri married Victoria Henriette Schmidt, a daughter of the Sebnitz rector Joseph Schmidt, who gave birth to two sons and four daughters.

In February 1777, Petri had school comedies performed for two days in the Bautzner shooting house, although the school council and the rector had spoken out against it. Petri also managed the positions of sub-rector and organist for several years . This strain attacked his health and in 1787 he received the privilege of importing country beer from the council to improve his "health conditions". In the same year he was in Döhlen in Kubschütz a mine under the name of Peter Grube mount up , which had consisted only of short duration and Zubußen.

From 1799–1804, the later composer and poet Leopold Schefer was his student at the grammar school.

Petri died of exhaustion in 1808.

His older brother Christian Abraham Petri (1736-1818) was archdeacon in Budissin, the younger brother Christoph Petri (1758-1827) cantor and music director in Sorau. The Görlitz cantor and music director Georg Gottfried Petri (1715–1795) is his uncle.
