Georg Gottfried Petri

Georg Gottfried Petri (born December 9, 1715 in Sorau ; † July 6, 1795 in Görlitz ) was a German cantor and composer .

Life

Petri initially studied law for four years in Halle and then initially worked as a private tutor . On April 30, 1748 he was appointed music director to Guben . In 1755 he applied in vain to succeed Gottlob Harrer as Thomaskantor in Leipzig . From 1764 he was cantor and music director as well as teacher at the grammar school in Görlitz .

Petri had an extensive music library of around 1000 works, including compositions by Georg Philipp Telemann , Johann Sebastian Bach , Johann Friedrich Doles and Gottfried August Homilius .

Johann Samuel Petri was his nephew .
