Julius Müller (athlete, 1938)

Julius Müller (born December 16, 1938 in Delmenhorst ; † September 19, 2017 there ) was a German walker . From 1959 to 1973 he started eighteen times in the national jersey.

Müller started in 1959 for the Hamburger Sportverein , 1961, 1969 and 1970 for the Delmenhorster TV . From 1962 to 1968 and 1976 he competed for Eintracht Frankfurt , 1974 for Werder Bremen . Müller took second place in the 20 km walk at the German championships in 1959 , together with Claus Bartels and Horst Gerdau he won the team championship. In 1961 Müller reached fourth place in the 20 km walk.

Müller won his first individual title in 1962 in the 50 km walk , together with Siegmut Halboth and Claus Bartels he also won the team championship. In 1963 Müller won the individual competition over 20 km and together with Hannes Koch and Bernhard Nermerich in the team competition. In 1964 Müller started over both distances, over 50 km he was second behind Nermerich in the individual standings, while Nermerich, Müller and Halboth were victorious in the team standings. Three weeks later, Müller finished sixth in the individual competition over 20 km, together with Gerd Schuth and Claus Bartels he won the team competition. In 1965 Nermerich, Schuth and Bartels won the team competition over 20 km, as 16th in the individual classification, Müller finished sixth with the second team from Frankfurt. In 1966 Müller was eleventh in the individual competition over 20 km, in the team competition he won together with Horst-Rüdiger Magnor and Bernhard Nermerich. In 1967 the same team won, Müller took seventh place in the individual standings.

In 1968 Müller won the team competition together with Nermerich and Magnor over both distances, in the individual competition he finished fourth over 50 km and second over 20 km. Julius Müller started at the Olympic Games in 1968 in the 20 km walk, but was disqualified after 14 kilometers.

In 1969, Müller took second place in the indoor championships in 10,000-meter walking, and in the open-air championships he won over 20 km for the second time after 1963. Müller won his fourth and last individual title in 1970 at the indoor championships. In the 1970s, Müller only rarely took top places in German championships. In 1976 he was sixth in the individual competition over 20 km and won the team classification together with Hans Michalski and Walter Drössler .

Julius Müller was an independent haulage contractor and coal dealer. Both his wife and three children were active walkers. In the 1990s, Julius Müller worked as a trainer for the DLV .
