Raised in Gleiwitz in Upper Silesia , Hans Michalski lived as a teenager in Ludwigshafen before he moved to Gießen and later settled in Alten-Buseck after his marriage . Before his athletics career , he was a handball goalkeeper before he discovered walking through running . Hans Michalski found a sporty home at Eintracht Frankfurt in a training group with Bernhard Nermerich and other walkers, where an annual workload of 6000 kilometers was implemented.

From 1973 to 1983 Hans Michalski won the Hessian championships in 20 km walking every year, won a total of 46 Hessian titles, and in 1980 the traditional Lübeck - Hamburg 62 km walk .
