Herbert Melzer (born March 5, 1913 ; † unknown) was a German football coach who worked in the field of GDR football . In 1950 he helped Horch Zwickau to the GDR championship.

Coaching career

The ZSG Horch Zwickau needed three coaches on the way to the GDR championship title in 1949/50. After the collaboration with Friedrich Müller and Hans Ulbricht each ended prematurely, Herbert Melzer took over the training of the league team six match days before the end of the season in March 1950. At this point in time, Horch Zwickau was already at the top of the table. Under Melzer, the lead in the table was lost to SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt in the meantime , but the Zwickau team defeated the Dresden team 5-1 on the last match day and thus secured the championship. After the end of the season, Melzer's activity in Zwickau was also ended.

After a year break, Melzer reappeared as the coach of a league team. At the beginning of the 1951/52 season he took over the company sports community (BSG) progress Meerane . When the BSG progress had remained on a relegation place for almost the entire first half of the season, Melzer had to vacate his position as coach at the beginning of the second half of the season. But even his successor could not save the team from relegation.

In the following years, Melzer looked after numerous teams in the second-rate GDR league :

  • In 1953 Melzer became district champion Gera with BSG Chemie Jena , which rose to the GDR league. After one season, Melzer rose with the team back into the district league.
  • 1954/55 Melzer trained the GDR league club BSG Wismut Gera . Since he could not realize the hoped-for resurgence after the 1953 league relegation, he was replaced after the transition in 1955 .
  • In 1956 (from 1956 to 1960 the game was played every calendar year), Melzer took over BSG Chemie Wolfen, which was also represented in the GDR league, during the last days of the game . With the final ranks 8th, 4th and 3rd (1958) he continuously developed the quality of the team.
  • Because of this performance, Wismut brought Gera Melzer back in 1959 as coach of the GDR league team. The Geraer had not reached the league promotion even during Melzer's absence and now gave Melzer more time. He was able to train the Wismut team until the end of the 1963/64 season. After he had achieved his best result in Gera with third place this season, his coaching activity was ended.
  • For the 1964/65 season Melzer moved to league competitor Motor West Karl-Marx-Stadt . The team, which is to be seen as a branch of the upper division club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , suffered from the permanent exchange of players with the sports club, could not hold the class under Melzer and was relegated after three years in the GDR league.
  • In 1965/66 Melzer successfully trained the GDR league team of BSG Motor WEMA Plauen . The BSG had upgraded this season with experienced players in the upper league, and Melzer led the team in third place this season, the best position of the Vogtlanders in their 13-year-old East German league membership.
  • In the following years Melzer was active in the third class district league. In the Karl-Marx-Stadt district he trained in the second half of the 1960s with SG Blau-Weiß Reichenbach , with whom he became vice district champion in 1967. In 1970 he helped the BSG Stahl Brandenburg to the district championship and promotion to the GDR league. There he was in charge of BSG Stahl until March 1972, five game days before the end of the season.
  • At the beginning of the 1972/73 season Melzer took over the East German league promoted TSG Gröditz . Although the newcomer managed to stay up under Melzer, his coaching activity was ended after the season was over.

Subsequently, Herbert Melzer no longer succeeded in gaining a foothold in the upper leagues of GDR football.
