The 1. FC Passau is a sports club with 1,200 members from Passau in Lower Bavaria . The club's home games are played in the Dreiflüssestadion . The club achieved national fame through its football team, which played for years in the Bavarian Football League - at that time the 3rd division - and its successful athletics department.

history

1911 to 1945 - the early days

In Passau football was played from 1893 at the Athleten Club (today ASV Passau) and from 1910 on TV Passau . In 1911 it was decided to found an independent football club. This was launched under the name of "Passau Football Club". However, due to the First World War , sports activities came to a complete standstill between 1914 and 1918. FC Passau celebrated its first promotion to the A-Class in Lower Bavaria in 1922 as champions of the B-Class. On November 8, 1925, the first national title followed as the winner of the Upper Palatinate / Lower Bavaria district cup championship and in November of the following year the merger with the Spielvereinigung Passau, founded in 1923. However, the name FC Passau continued to exist. After relegation to the district class in 1935, the club returned one season later, for the 25th anniversary of the club, as the undefeated group champion of the 1st Lower Bavarian district class in the next higher district league.

1945 to 1968 - The great “Maierhof” era

Due to the prohibition of the activities of former sports officials after the Second World War , young people had to take the rebuilding of the club into their own hands. Since the old club names could no longer be used, FC Passau was first created on February 1, 1946 under the name Sportverein Passau (SV Passau). In the first post-war round, SV Passau came in third behind Kickers Passau and FC Vilshofen.

From July 14, 1946, the club again carried its old name FC Passau for a short time. A little later the clubs Kickers Passau (formerly RPSG) and FC Passau merged under the name "Sportverein Passau". This sports club Passau appeared instead of Kickers Passau in the South Bavarian State League. The Fusion FC and Kickers should bring a sporting concentration, especially in football. The state league could be held until 1948 before relegation to the Lower Bavarian district league had to be accepted. From its 40th anniversary in 1951, the club was now called 1. FC Passau .

In the same year, the club obtained the first place in the table and the associated title "Niederbayrischer Kreismeister" to participate in promotion games to the national league. There, however, Passau did not prevail in a round with Amberg, Perlach, Aubing, Kempten and Günzburg and it was not until 1958 that the club achieved promotion to the "amateur upper house". The team stayed there in the first season, before relegating the following year despite a comparatively high level of popularity of around 2,700 spectators per home game at the “Maierhof sports field”. In the 50th year of its existence, 1. FC Passau won the district league championship and celebrated the immediate resurgence, which was followed by another relegation in 1962.

The FC managed to rise again in the 1963/64 season. In the final of the championship, FC Passau met FC “Sturm” Hauzenberg in Plattling (both teams were equal on points) and in a crowd of 10,000 spectators, which was above average for a district league game, FC Passau won 3-2 after extra time. Passau was able to assert itself there for the first time in the medium term and in the then most successful season 1967/68 in the club's history, the team won the regional league championship, which qualified them for participation in the Bayernliga . In addition, the club won the Niederbayern-Pokal with a 3-1 final win against Bayern league club TSV Straubing .

1968 to 1977 - Bayernliga in the new stadium

After the promotion to the Bayern League and the move to the Dreiflüssestadion, the euphoria in Passau was great and at the end of the 1968/69 season, FC Passau took a good seventh place in the table. In the following years, the FC was able to maintain its position in the Bayernliga without any problems, despite some changes in personnel. In the 1972/73 season, Passau, under the direction of the new coach Sepp Grininger, defeated the regional league team Jahn Regensburg 3-1 in the first round of the South German Cup and was defeated 0-2 a week later (23 July 1972) by TSV 1860 Munich . The most successful season in the club's history was the 1973/74 season, when the team finished fourth. A twelfth and eighth place in the final table followed in the subsequent two seasons.

After the 1975/76 season, some important players left the club, including Eduard Kirschner, the reigning Bayern League top scorer, and TW Atzinger, Günter Wiesmeier (both retired), Sepp Nusko, Peter Kunze and Hermann Reiter. The result was relegation in 1977 as bottom of the table with a total of 102 goals conceded.

1977 to 1992 - a steady ups and downs

After relegation from the Bayern League, the club initiated a change. In the summer of 1977 alone, he reported 14 newcomers. However, the “Mission Recovery” could not be successfully carried out. In the end, FC had to be content with fifth place. In the years between 1978 and 1980, the personnel carousel continued to rotate, including changes in the board of directors and in the coaching bench. Results were a tenth and eighth final table place in the seasons 1978/79 and 1979/80. The sporting trend continued downwards and, of all things, on the 70th anniversary of the club, Passau was relegated from the regional league to the district league as bottom of the table. Although they succeeded in the immediate re-emergence as clear champions of the District League East and a subsequent 1-0 in the promotion game against TSV Bogen, but two years later the team suffered another setback. After a positive start to the 1983/84 season and a good fourth place at the winter break, Passau fell into the lower half of the table. On the last day of the match, a win would have been enough to keep them from the league, but despite a 3-1 intermediate result up to the 80th minute Passau only played 3: 3. In the subsequent relegation, they lost three times on penalties and had to go to the district league again.

Two years later - just in time for the club's 75th anniversary in 1986 - Passau returned to the state league again after ETSV Landshut 09 were beaten 3: 2 (after 1: 2 deficit) in the promotion game. Edi Kirschner was brought back as the new player- coach and in the following years the FC was able to establish itself further and further in the top group of the regional league. In 1989, they narrowly failed to rise when Passau, together with SpVgg Fürth tied for points, took second place in the final table and lost the necessary play-off on penalties. Also in the 1989/90 season, the team around captain Helmut Heininger played again for promotion. In the second half of the season a three-way battle for the championship between Jahn Regensburg, SpVgg Fürth and FCP emerged. By the last day of the match all three were tied and a 2-0 home win against Fürth (goals: Armin Paulik, Christian Hois) resulted in a “championship playoff” between Passau and Jahn Regensburg in Straubing. Regensburg won 1-0 and in the relegation, which was unpopular for Passau, the possible promotion failed after a 2-1 win in the first game against Starnberg on a 0-3 against SV Lohhof.

The longed-for return to the Bayern League should be made perfect in the 1991/92 season. Thanks to positive performances in preparation, coach Krinner's team showed themselves to be in good form early on and FC became the top favorites of the Landesliga Mitte. With a suitable mix of seasoned players like Helmut Heininger and Bernhard Meisl (who returned from the Munich Lions before the season) and young talents like Ludwig Preis , SpVgg Landshut and 1. FC Passau set themselves apart from their opponents and in a " Showdown ”on the last matchday, a draw was enough for Passau. The encounter ended with a late goal by Bernhard Meisl in the 83rd minute with 1-0, which brought Passau back to Bavaria's highest amateur class, the third highest league in Germany, after a 15-year lean period.

1992 to 2006 - Hot Bayern League duels

The Bayernliga promotion was particularly attractive because there were duels with prominent clubs, including TSV 1860 Munich, who was relegated from the second Bundesliga. The team was strengthened with Josef Gsödl ( SpVgg Unterhaching ), Helmut Höfler (FC Vilshofen) and Markus Weinzierl (own youth). At the end of the first season, as in the 1993/94 season, they landed on a respectable tenth place in the table. A turning point was the death of 52-year-old President Jürgen Wösner, whose ten-year term of office had left a lasting mark on the club, during the 1994/95 season. Initially, the club was able to hold its own in relegation battle until 1997 (in the end, the club ranked once in thirteenth and then twice in fourteenth place) and in the 1997/98 season also achieved the best placement of the FCP in 24 years. The team around coach Edi Kirschner was even the league leader at times before the “FC veteran” surprisingly resigned after differences with the board and the department head. He was succeeded by Fred Arbinger , also an ex-Bayern professional. At the end of the 1997/98 season, 1. FC Passau finished sixth with 55 points and 62:48 goals.

In the summer break before the 1999/2000 season, the team threatened to fall apart. Important players left the club and coach Karpisek withdrew. In addition to the necessary upheaval, the financial situation had worsened and a completely new management team took over the helm at the 1999 annual general meeting. During this turbulent time, the team fell back to the bottom of the table, which ended the Bayern League chapter for the second time in the club's history. Under the new leadership, Bernhard Robl, who had just been elected as head of department, looked for a suitable coach and found a player-coach in Thomas Fuchs, who was only 28 years old - previously a regional league player in Mauth.

The duo Robl / Fuchs put together a new national league team from former Bayern league players and young talents from the region. Despite some derby successes, the team often had to pay hardship in the first year, so that in the end it was only enough for twelfth place with 43 points. However, the trend reversal was achieved and the visible further sporting development was expressed in the 2001/02 season with 13 unbeaten games in a row and winning the autumn championship (in the end, due to a series of bankruptcies with five defeats, fourth place was to book). The 2002/03 season, which brought Passau the runner-up title after a long duel for the championship with SpVgg Landshut, started with growing optimism . In the subsequent promotion relegation, Passau first defeated the highly rated Bayernliga relegant SG Quelle Fürth on penalties and in another play -off against TSV Großbardorf 3-1. After three years, 1. FC Passau was back in the Bayern League. The club continued to rely on young talent under Fuchs / Robl and did without “big names” among the newcomers. The result was that the team was facing a long and hard relegation battle and in the end Passau was relegated to relegation against Eintracht Bamberg . There the 37-year-old goalkeeper oldie Sepp Stadler, who was only brought in in winter, secured the club's class with three penalties. The Bayernliga season 2004/05 took a quieter course and thanks to a strong preliminary round (seventh place), relegation was never in serious danger. After the season, however, Thomas Fuchs and Bernhard Robl, the “makers” of the team, said goodbye.

Somewhat surprisingly, Rudi Damberger took over as trainer and sporting director, but he resigned after a short time due to a weak start to the season. As an interim successor, veteran Edi Kirschner returned to the coaching bench and in November 2005, Christian Titz, a former youth coach from Alemannia Aachen , was hired. Titz quickly got the displeasure of the Passau football scene, which was mainly due to the fact that after two defeats at the end of the year he almost completely turned the squad inside out during the winter break. Well-deserved players like Lux, Beyer, Ersin and Andreas Stadler had to leave, and in return ex-players from his time in Aachen came to Passau. The personnel changes did not have the desired effect and in addition to the injury concerns, public disputes between coach Titz, some players and the board of directors increased. At the end of the season Passau landed on the penultimate place and had to return to the national league.

Since 2006

After relegation, the difficult sporting situation was also accompanied by a tense financial situation. The dispute between the board and the coach escalated, the club and the coach went to court. From the argument, Titz emerged as the winner; but almost the entire management team and numerous players left the club. Under these bad conditions, the first nine games of the new season were lost, and on August 22, 2006 Titz was also sacked. His successor Gerhard Hörl was then only in office until winter before the team under ex-youth coach Klaus Greiner and Dominique Herman played the second half of the season. With many students instead of the "legionnaires" brought in by Titz and now sorted out, the coaching duo won three more draws, which did little to change the sobering record of only seven points and the relegation as bottom of the table. For the first time in 21 years, 1. FC Passau had returned to the district level for the 2007/08 season. And there, too, the club had to tremble under the new coach Georg Süß and nine newcomers about staying in the class. A 5-2 win against Waldkirchen on the last day of the match prevented further relegation and thus ended the downward trend. In the following two years, the team was again in the upper part of the table, but after fourth place in the 2008/09 season, especially in the 2009/10 season, due to the more ambitious goals, only partially met the wishes of the club management. From the first three games of the 2009/10 season only one point was taken and after a temporary improvement, coach Suss resigned after a poor performance in the first leg against Zwiesel (2: 3). Thomas Fuchs, under whom the club had had the greatest successes in recent years, and his former player Basti Huber were appointed as successors. The second half of the season was successful, but despite nine games without defeat, the bad start of the season could not be compensated and in the end, sixth place with 48 points remained. In the 2017/18 season the 1. FCP was "Niederbayerischer Meister", champion of the District League East and thus qualified for the Bavarian State League 2018/19.

Teams

1. FC Passau currently provides two teams in the men's division (regional league and district class) and various junior teams from U19 to U9. The women's and girls 'soccer department currently includes a women's team and several girls' teams. The women's team plays in the regional league.

Stadion

Three rivers stadium

1. FC Passau plays its home games in the Dreiflüssestadion . The Dreiflüssestadion is a multifunctional stadium with a current capacity of 6,000 spectators. Before the standing grandstand of the north curve and the south grandstand were demolished, the stadium had a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The covered grandstand seats 1,100 spectators. The turf soccer field is surrounded by a synthetic running track.

Other departments

Archery

The archery department was established at 1. FC Passau after the 1972 Summer Olympics, which made archery popular in Germany, in early 1976 BC. Kurt E. Adamovsky, Passau (and 4 other shooters) founded. Official presentation at the YHV of the 1. FCP, on March 23, 1976 (1st department head until December 1996) The FITA shooting (FITA = international umbrella organization of sports archers) was back then after a 52-year break as Olympic discipline recognized. Today the archery department at 1. FC Passau has around 90 members. In FITA archery, ten targets are shot from a distance of 30 - 90 m (distances in the hall 18 and 25 m). The Olympic recurve bow or the compound bow are used as sports equipment. Field and hunting archery and so-called 3D shooting have been booming for several years. Here we shot in the forest and in the fields at faithfully reproduced animal dummies in different terrain, at different distances. The winners are determined in the bow classes recurve, compound, long, rider and primitive bow. The archers of 1. FC Passau made it to the top of the German championship again and again. It is necessary to qualify through the Gaume Championship, the Lower Bavarian and the Bavarian Championship.

Former departments

athletics

Athletics has a long tradition at 1. FC Passau. Before the Second World War in particular, the club had a high-performing department, which fell asleep after the athletics facilities on the Maierhof sports field were removed. After the construction of the three-river stadium - equipped with beautiful athletics facilities - in 1969 and the move of 1. FC Passau from the Maierhof sports field to the new stadium, the athletics department was re-established. On January 8, 1970, 1. FC Passau approved the re-establishment. Many - including well-known - athletes quickly announced their entry into the newly established department. On January 24, 1970, the founding meeting of the athletics department took place in the club house of 1. FC Passau.

As early as in the first year, the athletics department was able to position itself as a club at the top of Lower Bavarian athletics. In August 1971 the 100th member could be accepted. At the city championships in 1971, 1. FC Passau athletes won 30 of a total of 37 disciplines. In 1972, Günther Zahn won the German Youth Championship over 1500 meters for male youth both indoors and outdoors - the reward: he was allowed to light the Olympic flame at the 1972 Olympics in Munich as the final runner. In addition to countless Lower Bavarian, a large number of Bavarian and some German championship titles, athletes from 1. FC Passau also achieved top placements at European and World Championships. Particularly noteworthy are Ewald Possin (fourth at the World Championships Discus and Ball AK VIII - 1979), Peter Scholz (European champion in the 4 × 100 m relay in 1986 and 1988).

In 2019, the athletics department broke away from 1. FC Passau. This resulted in the new athletics club LAC Passau.

hockey

The first division besides soccer at 1. FC Passau was hockey. This was already affiliated to the association on October 22, 1922. In 1934 the Passau Hockey Club joined FC Passau. In 1945/46 the hockey players of SV (FC) Passau became champions of Lower Bavaria-Upper Palatinate. This success could be repeated in 1947 and 1948. In the course of the downsizing of the Maierhof sports field, the hockey players migrated to Eintracht Passau in 1951.

Handball

The first mention of handball at FC Passau is in 1929/30. With a 17-2 win over TV Passau , FC 1934/35 became champions of the 1st Lower Bavaria district class. The department also won the title in the following year. In 1951 the handball players finally migrated to TV Passau.

Boxing

Boxers competed for the club for the first time in 1924. Boxing had a heyday in Passau immediately after the Second World War. 8,000 spectators in the [Nibelungenhalle] saw the comparison between Lower Bavaria and Inn / Chiemgau. At the end of the 1940s, however, a certain amount of boxing fatigue became apparent. In 1951, the FC department finally dissolved due to a lack of young talent. The boxing division was re-established in 1986, but had to be discontinued after a short time due to a lack of training opportunities.

Heavy athletics

"The heavy athletics department that joined the club won 1st place in the heavyweight division and in the age group," is the first reference to this division at FC Passau 1925/26. In 1947 the FC lifters were Lower Bavarian champions before FTSV Landshut. In 1949 it is reported: “SV [FC] Passau becomes Lower Bavarian champions for the 16th time in a row.” The fateful year 1951, in which several branches left FC Passau, also brought the end of the heavy athletics department.

Tennis + ski

In 1982 a “Tennis + Ski” department was established at 1. FC Passau. The wish for the club's own tennis courts could not be realized, however, as the hoped-for building permit for the nearby area above the stadium side square could not be obtained.
