The chevron butterflyfish ( Chaetodon trifascialis ) is a species of the genus Chaetodon from the butterflyfish family (Chaetodon), which is found in the Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Society Islands . The distribution area covers more than 75 million km² and extends in the north to southern Japan, in the east to Hawaii and in the south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa Iti .

description

Adult animals have a laterally flattened, for butterfly fish relatively elongated white body with narrow zigzag markings and can be up to 18 cm long. Young animals usually have a yellow tail and a wide black stripe that extends from the back of the dorsal fin to the back of the anal fin. The tail pattern and the color of the rear part of the body change drastically as it grows, whereby the tail is completely black and has a thin yellow outline, the rear part of the body does not differ in color from the areas further in front in adult animals. The rounded dorsal fin in juvenile fish tapers to a point in adult fish.

Systematics

With its special, age-dependent coloration and elongated outline, this species was placed in the monotypical subgenus Megaprotodon . Its closest living relatives appear to the species of the genera Discochaetodon (z. B. Eight-banded butterflyfish , C. octofasciatus ) and Tetrachaetodon (z. B. Einfleckfalterfisch , C. speculum ) to be.

Acropora hyacinthus

Way of life

Chaetodon trifascialis is a territorial species that occurs in semi-protected, seaward and shallow lagoon reefs and feeds on polyps and mucus from table-shaped acropores (e.g. Acropora hyacinthus ). It occurs at depths between 2 m and 30 m. The species is territory- forming , whereby the territories are often above the table corals. Males and females have separate but closely spaced territories. Chaetodon trifascialis is very aggressive towards intruders .

Since Chaetodon trifascialis is bound to the occurrence of table-shaped acropores and these hard corals are severely affected by coral death, the fish are also considered to be potentially endangered according to the IUCN (Near Threatened).
