Manuel Sanders (born April 3, 1998 in Dülmen , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay .

career path

Sanders began training as an event manager in 2016 and has been employed as such with a part-time job at a Dortmund event agency since 2019, which gives him enough time to focus on competitive sports.

Athletic career

Manuel Sanders took part in training at TSG Dülmen for the first time at the age of seven and subsequently tried out all disciplines except for hammer throwing and walking until he finally decided on the longest sprint route in May 2016.

At the junior gala in Mannheim at the end of June 2016, Sanders, Johann Rosin, Fabian Dammermann and Marvin Schlegel had already met the 4 x 400 meter relay norm for the U20 World Championships with 3: 08.52 minutes , where he was at the end of July with Fabian Dammermann, Marvin Schlegel and Julian Wagner took 5th place. A week later, Sanders was German U20 runner-up over 400 meters behind Marvin Schlegel and ahead of Fabian Dammermann .

In 2017 he came in 7th place in the stadium round at the U20 European Championships and won the 400 meter title in the German U20 Championships in a new personal best of 46.63 s.

In 2018, Sanders won bronze in the older age group at the German U23 championships over 400 meters and also started in the active field, where he achieved sixth place with his personal best in the German championships . The German Athletics Association (DLV) nominated him for the European Championships , but he was not used.

In 2019, after a protracted illness, Sanders was only able to train fully again from February onwards. At the World Relays , the season reached 6th place in the B final. He also occupied this placement with the relay of the LGO Dortmund at the German U23 championships , where he became German U23 runner-up over the stadium round . With the long relay, Sanders won gold at the U23 European Championships . A little later he won the German championship title over 400 meters in a personal best of 45.86 s . A little later he became team vice European champion with the team . Sanders was less successful with eleventh place in the long season, because Johannes Trefz had suffered a strain in his flexor at position three, but was able to bite through for the valuable points for the team at the last change. At the World Championships , he retired with the mixed relay in qualification. At the end of the year Sanders led the German best list with 45.86 s over 400 meters.

Sanders is part of the DLV's junior squad 1 U23 .

Club affiliations

Manuel Sanders has started for LG Olympia Dortmund (parent club TSC Eintracht Dortmund ) since 2019 . In 2018 he was at SC Preußen Münster , but it stopped supporting top athletics at the end of the year. Until 2017, Sanders belonged to TSG Dülmen .
