The 24th European Athletics U20 Championships took place from July 20-23, 2017 in the Italian city of Grosseto . Grosseto hosted the European Junior Championships for the second time after 2001 .

The title fights were awarded to Grosseto on June 12, 2015 at the 144th official council meeting of the European Athletic Association (EAA) in Oslo .

The European Championships were able to record great economic and social successes, as a study by the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) showed. According to her, eight million euros flowed into the local, regional and national coffers, and the image had increased positively through the championships, as 97 percent of the visitors would go back.

Attendees

The German Athletics Association (DLV) named 80 athletes (37 juniors and 43 juniors).

The Swiss Athletics Association (Swiss Athletics) selected a 37-person team (19 men and 18 women).

The Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV) selected 19 athletes, of which only 15 were supposed to compete in 18 competitions, because four athletes could not start for various reasons despite the limits set.

The Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA) sent four female athletes.

The World Athletics Federation (IAAF) announced in January 2018 that the initially victorious Jasmijn Lau had passed a positive doping test on the final day. The IAAF did not accuse Lau of any wrongdoing because she had no knowledge of the substance contained in a tea, and therefore only disqualified her for that day. The following Miriam Dattke was awarded the gold medal at the German Championships in the 10 km road race in Siegburg in 2019.
