Johannes Erm started playing at a young age, initially playing soccer at FC Flora Tallinn . In 2011 he started athletics. He attended Tallinn Secondary School of Science before graduating from the University of Georgia where he is part of the college sports team, the Georgia Bulldogs .
Athletic career
At the beginning of his athletics career, Erm first started in the jumping disciplines. In 2014 he started in a decathlon for the first time at national level and immediately became Estonian U18 champion. In 2016 he competed in the decathlon at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz. With a total of 7879 points, he was able to win the bronze medal. In 2017 he reached more than 8000 points in a decathlon for the first time at the U20 European Championships in Grosseto. With 8141 points he won the silver medal. In 2018, when he switched to college in the USA, he primarily appeared in local decathlons. In spring he competed in several indoor heptathlon matches, in which he set up several personal bests.
In the summer of 2019, Erm took part in the U23 European Championships in Gävle, where he won the silver medal behind the eventual world champion Niklas Kaul . With 8445 points he set a new record and improved his performance in a total of three sub-disciplines. In spring 2020 he also set a new record for the heptathlon in the hall.
