The 6th European Junior Athletics Championships took place from August 20 to 23, 1981 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in the Overvecht athletics stadium . Almost 700 athletes from 26 countries were registered for the 38 decisions of these championships, of which the DVfL of the GDR sent 58 athletes.

These then also dominated the championships, in which they won not only 22 titles, but a total of 42 medals.

Bad weather ( rain and strong gusts of wind ) prevented new bests from being recognized on the first two days, especially in the sprint ( 100 m ) and long jump. On the last two days, the athletes managed to set four junior world records and three junior European records.
