Erik de Bruin (born May 25, 1963 in Hardinxveld-Giessendam ) is a former Dutch discus thrower and shot putter .

He took part in the 1984 Olympic Games , where he was eighth in the shot put and ninth in the discus throw. In Seoul he was again ninth with the discus at the 1988 Olympic Games . He celebrated the greatest success of his career at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1991 , when he won the silver medal in the discus throw behind Lars Riedel . Previously, he had also won silver with the discus at the European Championships in 1990 .

De Bruin holds the Dutch record in discus throwing at 68.12 m (established on April 1, 1991 in Sneek ). At times he also held the national record in the shot put with a distance of 20.95 m (established on May 14, 1986 in Leiden ). At the 1993 ASV sports festival in Cologne, he was tested positive for testosterone and HCG . He was acquitted in the Netherlands, but later banned from the IAAF for four years.

De Bruin is married to the Irish Olympic swimming champion Michelle Smith , whose coach he was also.
