List of German champions in 20 km walking
The 20 km walk was held at the German Athletics Championships in 1933 and 1934 and then again from 1955 in both the Federal Republic and the GDR . In 1942, 1946 to 1948 there were championship competitions over a distance of 25 km. Each time the walkers determined their masters over this distance, in the Federal Republic of 1953 and in the GDR in 1954. The relevant results are listed here for the sake of completeness.
Internationally, the route length of the varied near the 50-km walk second competition in going over several decades. It was not until the Olympic Games in 1956 that 20 km walking became established here .
The Gehsport has long been reserved for men alone. For women, a German championship was held for the first time in 1980 , initially over a distance of 5 kilometers, then from 1987 over 10 kilometers. Since 1998 women have also held their championships in street walking over 20 kilometers.
An additional team classification was first included in the championship program in 1933, in 1942, 1947, 1948 and 1953 there were additional team ratings in the 25 km competition that was held at that time. A team competition over 20 km has been on the program of the German Athletics Championships since 1955 . With the exception of 1933 and 1961, the order of the teams was always determined by adding up the three best individual walkers of a club. In 1933 and 1961, the ranking was based on the placement of the three best individual walkers of a club. In the GDR there were additional team champions from 1955 to 1965. Since the number of participants in walking competitions fell sharply and three athletes have to finish for a team classification of at least two teams, this classification has not always taken place in the last two decades. Since 1998, when this walking distance was introduced, the women have also identified additional team champions from the start. However, there was no team ranking for women more often than for men.

Sources on the Internet such as sport-komplett.de assign the championship title to Axel Noack from TSC Berlin, who was GDR champion in indoor walking and 50 km walking in 1990.
