Karl Friedrich August Degener (born February 15, 1943 in Northeim ) is a former German athlete who was three times German champion in the 50 km walk from 1981 to 1983 .

Athletic career

Karl Degener began his competitive sports career at the age of over 30 with TSC Dorste . From 1976 to 1979 the post office clerk started for TSV Salzgitter . In 1976, he finished 15th at the German Championships in 20 km walking , the team from Salzgitter with Gerhard Weidner , Karl Degener and Hans-Joachim Kloppe took second place behind Eintracht Frankfurt . In the 50 km walk Degener reached 17th place, Weidner, Kloppe and Degener won the championship title. At the 1977 championships , Degener was among the top eight walkers in Germany for the first time. Over 20 kilometers he came in seventh place, the team Weidner, Degener and Kloppe won the title. Over 50 kilometers, Degener reached sixth place, Weidner, Degener and Kloppe took second place in the team classification behind the LAC Quelle Fürth . In 1978 Degener again finished seventh in the individual ranking over 20 kilometers, the team with Weidner, Degener and Kloppe finished second behind Fürth. Degener reached fifth place over 50 kilometers; Weidner, Degener and Kloppe won the title. In 1979 Degener was fourth over 20 kilometers, the team with Weidner, Degener and Kloppe took second place behind Fürth. Over 50 kilometers, Degener also achieved fourth place in the individual ranking and second place with the team.

From 1980 to 1991 Degener competed for VfL Wolfsburg . In 1980 Degener was German runner-up over 20 kilometers behind Heinrich Schubert . The Wolfsburg team with Karl Degener, Jürgen Meyer and Mario Kerber took third place. Over 50 kilometers, Degener was fourth in the individual and, together with Jürgen Meyer and Michael Ritter, second in the team standings behind Fürth. In 1981 Degener took second place over 20 kilometers behind Alfons Schwarz , who started for Fürth . In the team classification, the Fürth team won ahead of Wolfsburg with Degener, Meyer and Ritter. Degener won over 50 kilometers in the individual competition in 1981 and, together with Meyer and Ritter, also in the team competition.

In 1982 Degener took third place in the individual competition over 20 kilometers behind Alfons Schwarz and Franz-Josef Weber , the Wolfsburg team with Degener, Meyer and Uwe Jakob came in second behind the Fürth team. At the European Championships in Athens , Degener reached eleventh place over 50 kilometers. At the end of the season, Degener won the championship title over 50 kilometers in both the individual and the team, which again included Meyer and Ritter. In 1983 Franz-Josef Weber won the German championships over 20 kilometers ahead of Degener, the Wolfsburg team with Degener, Meyer and Jakob won the title. Degener won over 50 kilometers in the individual standings, in the team standings the Fürth team won ahead of Degener, Meyer and Götz from Wolfsburg. At the World Championships in Helsinki Degener reached the finish line in 18th place after 4:06:51 h. In 1984 Degener was runner-up behind Alfons Schwarz over 20 kilometers and the Fürth team also won ahead of the Wolfsburg team. In 1985 , Degener was third for the last time in the individual ranking of 20 kilometers. Over 50 kilometers he finished second behind Horst-Joachim Matern from Fürth , and the Wolfsburg team took second place on both routes. Degener won his last medal in the individual competition over 50 kilometers in third place at the 1989 championships . From 1992 to 1994 Degener competed for the Berliner SV 92 , together with Volkmar Scholz and Carlo Müller Degener won the team title over 50 kilometers again in 1992 .

From 1977 to 1989 Karl Degener wore the national jersey in 27 international missions. Degener set his personal best in street walking at the age of over 40. On August 28, 1983, he walked the 50 kilometers in 3:56:52 h in Letter . On March 17, 1984, he reached the finish line in Wolfsburg over 20 kilometers after 1:25:56 h.
