Rosemarie Ackermann won her sixth high jump championship title in front of a home crowd in Cottbus
The GDR athletics championships were held for the 31st time in 1980 and took place from July 16 to 18 in the Max Reimann Stadium in Cottbus . The champions in the marathon and the men's 20 km walk were already determined in Eisenhüttenstadt from May 31 to June 1 .
The championship served as the final dress rehearsal for the athletics competitions starting on July 24 at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow .
In the heptathlon , which was on the program for the first time , 19-year-old Anke Vater set a new GDR record. Johanna Klier also succeeded in doing this in an invitation run in the 100-meter hurdles. Other best times like Marlies Göhr's in the 100 meter run fell victim to the mostly irregular wind conditions. Her time of 10.79 s meant a world record , but the tail wind was 3.3 m / s instead of the permissible 2.0 m / s.
In the men's category, eleven athletes managed to defend their title from the previous year, while six athletes managed to do so in the women's category. The SC Cottbus won the most league titles on home soil with five first places.
