GDR athletics championships 1984

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The women's quartet from left Rübsam , Walther , Koch and Busch set a new world record in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

The GDR athletics championships were held for the 35th time in 1984 and took place from June 1st to 3rd in the Georgij-Dimitroff stadium in Erfurt .

In the men's category, eight athletes ( Schröder (100 m), Schönlebe (400 m), Wagenknecht (800 m), Busse (1500 m), Kunze (5000 m), Munkelt (110 m hurdles), Beyer (ball) and Schult (Diskus)) to defend their title from the previous year, which in the women’s four athletes ( Göhr (100 m), Daute (wide), Briesenick (Kugel) and Beyer (Diskus) as well as the relay from SC Motor Jena (4 × 100 m)) succeeded. With seven titles, ASK Vorwärts Potsdam was the most successful team at the championships.

The selection relay for the invitation competition over 4 x 400 meters, with the world record for women and the European record for men, provided the sporting highlights. 18-year-old Volker Mai set new European junior records in the triple jump and Thomas Schönlebe in the 400-meter run, which Schönlebe had already improved once before. The women from SC Motor Jena set a new GDR record for club relays over 4 x 100 meters.

On May 5th, Ulrike Bruns set a new GDR record in the 3000-meter run in the Potsdam airship port stadium .

On July 20th and 21st, local resident Uwe Freimuth set a new GDR record with 8704 points in the all-around fighters in the Luftschiffhafen stadium in Potsdam .
