GDR athletics championships 1983
The GDR athletics championships were held for the 34th time in 1983 and took place from June 16 to 18 in the Ernst-Thälmann-Stadion in Karl-Marx-Stadt .
In the men’s race, seven athletes ( Wagenknecht (800 m), Schildhauer (10,000 m), Munkelt (110 m hurdles), Beyer (ball), Steuk (hammer), Michel (spear) and Voss (decathlon)) won their title to defend the previous year, which in the women’s six athletes ( Göhr (100 m), Koch (200 m), Jahn (100 m hurdles), Fiedler (400 m hurdles), Slupianek (ball) and father (heptathlon) as well as the relay from SC Motor Jena (4 × 100 m)). With five titles, SC Neubrandenburg was the most successful team in this championship.
On May 1, Ronald Weigel improved his own GDR best in the 50 km walk in Naumburg (Saale) and on May 28, Werner Schildhauer set a new GDR record in the 10,000 meter run in Jena Ernst Abbe sports field on.
In the all-round competition on May 21 and 22 in the Jahn Stadium in Neubrandenburg, Sibylle Thiele from Berlin set a new world junior performance with 6301 points.

Margin notes
Traditionally, successful athletes from previous years were ceremoniously bid farewell to the national team as part of the championships. Among the 28 women and men who ended their careers were Angela Voigt , Barbara Broschat and Rolf Beilschmidt .
