GDR athletics championships 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The women's quartet Geipel , Wöckel , Auerswald and Göhr from SC Motor Jena set a new GDR record for club relays in the 4 x 100 meter relay.

The GDR athletics championships were held for the 32nd time in 1981 and took place from August 7th to 9th at the Ernst Abbe sports field in Jena . The championship served as the final dress rehearsal for the European Athletics Cup in Zagreb a week later .

Among the men, four athletes ( Beck (400 m hurdles), Weber (pole high), Beyer (ball) and Steuk (hammer)) managed to defend their title from the previous year, which in the women’s five athletes ( Göhr (100 m) , Wöckel (200 m), Koch (400 m), Slupianek (ball) and Jahl (discus)) succeeded. With six titles each, the host SC Motor Jena and SC Magdeburg were the most successful teams and Frank Emmelmann from Magdeburg was the most successful athlete of this championship with three titles.

Sporting highlights were the junior European record of the only 16-year-old Heike Daute in the long jump, as well as the GDR records for club relays over 4 x 100 meters by SC Magdeburg for men and SC Motor Jena for women.

On May 23rd and 24th, Ramona Neubert set a new world record in the heptathlon in Halle (Saale) and on July 18th Uwe Dünkel achieved a new GDR record in the Berlin Wuhlheide over a 50 km walk.
