Birgit Uibel-Sonntag (born October 30, 1961 in Belten near Vetschau , Calau district , † January 10, 2010 in Cottbus ) was a German hurdler . Uibel-Sonntag is a recognized victim of state-prescribed doping in GDR competitive sports .
Career
When she was 14, Birgit Sonntag moved from TSG Lübbenau to the children's and youth sports school in Cottbus. She had her sporting highlights in the mid-1980s when she started for SC Cottbus . With the Cottbus 4 x 400 meter relay, she won the GDR championship title in 1980, and in 1984 she won the 400 meter hurdles. She competed ten times for the GDR selection in international matches. At the Universiade 1981 she won silver and at the European Athletics Championships in 1982 she finished sixth. In 1984, after the boycott of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles by the GDR, she had to end her career.
According to her own statements, Birgit Sonntag was already heavily doped at the age of 15; as a result, she had to struggle with serious health problems. At the end of her career, she gave birth to a disabled child in 1985. She was recognized as a GDR doping victim by the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne. In 1997, the ex-athlete made an important contribution to clarifying state doping in the GDR with her precise statements at the Central Investigation Center for Government and Association Crime. In 2000 she was a joint plaintiff in the GDR doping trial against Manfred Ewald and Manfred Höppner .
From 1981 to 1993 Birgit Uibel-Sonntag was married to the cycling trainer Detlef Uibel (* 1959). Most recently, Birgit Uibel-Sonntag was director of the Atlantis art gallery in Cottbus. In January 2010 she died at the age of 48 in Cottbus.
