Claus Biethan (* 24. January 1933 in Hamburg , † 21 February 1996 ) was a German athlete , the 1955 and 1960 German champion in 20-km walk , and 1956, 1957 and 1960, German champion in 50-km walk was .

Athletic career

Claus Biethan's father Otto Biethan (1908–1995) was third in the team classification in the 50-kilometer street at the German championships in 1949 with the Hamburger SV team. Claus Biethan also started for Hamburger SV until 1958 and then switched to SV Friedrichsgabe . In 1953 Claus Biethan was runner-up in the German Championships in 10,000-meter track walking behind Rudi Lüttge , and in 1954 he won the title on this route. He gave up at the European Championships in Bern .

At the German Championships in 1955 , walking the track over 10,000 meters was no longer on the program, Biethan won the championship title in street walking over 20 kilometers. In 1956 and 1957 he won over 50 kilometers. While Biethan was third with the Hamburger SV team in 1956, behind two teams from Eintracht Braunschweig , Claus Biethan, Emil Griem and Claus Bartels won the team championship over 50 kilometers in 1957. 1958 Biethan did not appear at the German championships. At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , Biethan was disqualified in the competition over 50 kilometers after about 20 kilometers.

In 1959, Biethan was fourth in the German championships over 20 kilometers and took second place with the SV Friedrichsgabe team behind the Hamburger SV team. At the championships over 50 kilometers, he finished second behind Claus Bartels. In the team competition, Claus Biethan, Harald Michelsen and Harry Binner won for SV Friedrichsgabe. In 1960 Biethan won three titles: he won over 20 kilometers in the individual classification, over 50 kilometers in the individual classification and together with Gerd Nickel and Harald Michelsen also in the team classification. In 1961 Beithan was again fifth over 50 kilometers and, together with Nickel and Binner, came second in the team standings, with the championship over 50 kilometers in 1961 in Friedrichsgabe .

From 1953 to 1960 Claus Biethan competed in 16 national jerseys.
