Maximilian Thorwirth (born January 9, 1995 in Düsseldorf , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German athlete who specializes in medium-distance runs .

career path

Thorwirth has been studying at the German Sport University Cologne since 2013 and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in sports management and sports communication. In distance learning , he has been making 2019 the Master of Arts in Business Management at the Steinbeis University Berlin .

Athletic career

Maximilian Thorwirth had his first competition at national level at the German Schoolchildren's Block Competition for 15 year olds in 2010. There he finished 10th with a good 2000 meter performance. At the state level, he won his first title over 3000 meters at the U18 North Rhine Championships in 2011. This year Thorwirth specialized in the 1500 meter run, surprisingly reached the final of the German U18 championships and finished it in 5th place.

After further finals at the German youth championships, he won his first bronze medal at the national level at the German U20 indoor championships in 2014 over 1500 meters. At the German U20 championships in the same year, he just missed bronze.

In 2015 Thorwirth was able to qualify for the German Championships in Nuremberg for the first time , made it to the final there and finished 8th. At the German U23 championships , he missed his second bronze medal at federal level by just a few hundredths. In 2016 he was able to qualify for the German Championships in Kassel, but failed as 13th in the run-up.

In spring 2017 Thorwirth increased his best performances over 1500 and 5000 meters significantly, so that he qualified in 3: 41.26 minutes for the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz , which he finished in 20th place in the preliminary stages . He was also successful at the German U23 championships . Thorwirth won gold over 5000 m and silver over 1500 meters within 24 hours, so that he was able to celebrate his first national title at the age of 22. Later in the season Thorwirth was nominated for the 4 x 1.5 km mixed relay at the European Cross Country Championships in Šamorín , in which the German relay reached 7th place.

In 2020 Thorwirth became German indoor champion over 3000 meters and celebrated his greatest national success.
