Torben Blech (born February 12, 1995 in Siegen ) is a German athlete who specializes in the pole vault . Before that he was a decathlete for a few years .

career path

Blech is studying psychology at the University of Cologne and wants to graduate with a bachelor's and master's degree.

Athletic career

Torben Blech initially did eight and nine fights and began pole vaulting when he was 14/15, which he enjoyed from the start. Later he was a decathlete for a few years , but injury problems never let him reach the top of the all-rounder. So he returned to the pole vault in 2019. Blech has been a competitive athlete since 2012.

In 2016, Blech became German U23 decathlon champion and German U23 runner-up with the 4 x 100 meter relay , with which he also became German runner-up .

In 2017, Blech won the relay title and bronze in the pole vault at the German U23 championships . In the decathlon he reached 9th place at the U23 European Championships .

In 2018, Blech did not contest a decathlon due to injury. With the baton he reached 6th place at the German Championships .

In 2019, Blech gave up the decathlon and started the new year in the pole vault at the Season Opening in Leverkusen and the New Year's competition in the Zeltpalast in Merzig with two personal indoor best performances and increased to 5.55 m at the 21st  International Indoor Meeting in Chemnitz. In Leipzig he became German indoor runner-up . At the Summer Universiade in Naples , Blech came second with a personal best of 5.76 m. On July 24, he met the standard for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo with a height of 5.80 m at Bayer Classics in Leverkusen . Since the beginning of the year, Blech had increased his best performance from 5.42 m (2018) to 5.80 m and led the German best list with Raphael Holzdeppe . At the European team championship he came with the team on the 2nd place. At the World Championships in Doha , sheet metal retired as eleventh in his qualifying group (23rd overall). Sheet metal is in the perspective of the DLV .

Blech has started for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen since 2014 , previously he was with LG Kindelsberg Kreuztal and CVJM Siegen SG .
