history

In 1867 some of the members resigned from the ATV Leipzig and founded the Leipziger Turnverein (Westvorstadt), which was later called the Turn- und Sportverein 1867. The association was founded in the “ Hôtel de Pologne ” with 327 members. The foundation stone was laid and a gymnasium opened on Schreberstrasse in the same year.

For the 25th anniversary of the foundation in 1892, the foundation stone of the new gym at Frankfurter Tor was laid on May 29th and the opening ceremony of the new hall with sports facility followed on October 3rd. In 1892 the association had 651 members, 29 of them instructors. In 1890 the association created a boys 'department and in 1892 a girls' department followed.

In the years 1867 to 1900 the gymnastics club took part in the following events:

On October 2, 1900, a large number of members separated from the club as a result of a dispute between the gymnastics council and the pre-gymnastics body, and founded the Leipzig gymnastics community. In 1901 a singing department was founded, it was called the "singing department of the Leipzig gymnastics club Westvorstadt". It consisted exclusively of gymnasts from the club.

A yearbook for 1903 with a calendar was published for the first time in 1904. The number of members in that year was 1651, including men, women and children. In 1905 the decline in membership was lamented, there were only 1,474 people, 177 fewer than two years ago.

In 1907 the 40th anniversary of the Leipzig gymnastics club (Westvorstadt) was celebrated. The celebration took place in the zoological garden with around 2400 participants. The number of members fell to 924. The art of fencing has been practiced since the club was founded, but there was no team. That changed in September 1907 when a permanent team was formed. In 1909 there was a transition from the previously cultivated method of fencing with French foil and heavy German saber to the modern light weaponry, Italian foil , light saber and sword .

At the XII. German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig in 1913, the Leipzig Gymnastics Club (Westvorstadt) won the most prizes of all Leipzig gymnastics clubs. There were three victories in the twelve-fight, 14 victories in the six-fight, 14 victories in fencing (which corresponded to half of all fencing prices that were lost to Saxony) and three victories in swimming.

The 1916 yearbook for 1915 reports that the hall also functioned as a military gym in the second year of the First World War . Because the hall and the gymnasium had been used for gymnastics, drill, rifle fencing, roll calls, instructions and other functions until the end of February 1915, according to recorded statistics, by 39,105 soldiers. The number of members was 1003 people, with 472 members in the field army.

In 1920, after 20 years of separation, the Leipzig gymnastics community was reunited with the parent club, under the new name Turn- und Sportverein 1867 Leipzig . Shortly before the merger, the Leipzig Gymnastics Club returned after a seven-year separation. On October 9, 1923, the gymnast footballers began their point games under the direction of the German Gymnastics Association - Saxon Game Association: TSV 1867 Leipzig - TV Holzhausen 2: 3 (2: 0).

In 1924 the club approved a swimming department. The practice evenings began in the city pool. The first task was to teach everyone to swim. In many Leipzig gymnastics clubs, swimming departments or teams were founded. Every suggestion made by the Gauschwimmwart was gratefully used, so Elster mass swimming was organized, water polo teams were put together for competitive games, jumpers were getting better and better trained and, last but not least, older gymnasts were taught diving.

In 1925 the gymnasium, playground and sports field in front of the Frankfurter Tor, behind the measuring site, was inaugurated in cooperation with the University of Leipzig. This system always produced new followers of the game and sports movement. Team sports such as fistball, soccer, handball, batting, and hockey became increasingly popular. On May 24, 1925, they took part in the preliminary round of the German football championship under the leadership of the German Gymnastics Association: ATV Breslau - TSV 1867 Leipzig 0: 3 (0: 0).

The following balance was drawn for the 60th anniversary of the foundation festival in 1927: According to the statistics from January 1, 1927, the gymnastics and sports club 1867 Leipzig had 1,703 club members, 1,065 men, 255 gymnasts, 219 boys and 164 girls. The women's department was opened 40 years earlier. Over the years three departments developed, the general gymnastics department, the afternoon special department and the evening department. On August 14, 1927, the football final for the grain badge was reached: TV Großzschocher - TSV 1867 Leipzig 2: 1 (0: 0).

In 1929 the German field handball championship took place under the direction of the German Gymnastics Association. In the preliminary round, TSV 1867 Leipzig won against TSV Spandau 1860 5: 4. In the second round, TSV 1867 Leipzig lost 3: 4 to TV Vorwärts Breslau and was thus eliminated.

The club took part in the German Gymnastics and Sports Festival in Breslau in 1938.

When a hail of bombs fell on Leipzig on December 4, 1943 during World War II , ruins dominated the streets and squares, and thousands of buildings showed various degrees of damage. The subsequent Allied air raids turned Leipzig into a landscape of ruins until the end of the war. The area of TSV 1867 Leipzig was not spared either and fell victim to the war.

The association was dissolved on December 20, 1945, and the registers were finally deleted on February 11, 1947.
