Sophie Gimmler (born March 18, 1996 in Merzig , Saarland ) is a German athlete who specializes in hammer throwing.

career path

Gimmler graduated from the Peter-Wust-Gymnasium in Merzig in 2014 . Her career aspiration was a police officer. On September 1, 2014, Gimmler was sworn in as a candidate for a commissioner and has five years to complete his training. She studies the police enforcement service at the University of Applied Sciences for Administration of the Saarland (FHSV) and is in the sports promotion group of the Saarland police .

Athletic career

Sophie Gimmler was successful in discus throwing and even more in the shot put as a student . In 2008 she won the discus throw at the Throwers Day of TV Ludweiler in the W12 age group and came second in the shot put. In 2009 she won the indoor competitions for pupils B and C in the shot put W13 again with a lead of almost one meter and increased her record to 9.11 meters.

In 2010, Gimmler began seriously throwing the hammer in autumn.

In 2011, with a personal best of 53.35 meters (3 kg), she became the South German champion in the W15 age group and improved the eleven-year-old Saarland record by 73 centimeters. In the year's best list she took second place behind Michelle Döpke .

In 2012 Gimmler won the U18 championship when she won the German Youth Championships with 62.46 meters (3 kg). With this she had also improved her own Saarland record by more than four meters. With this distance she also led the annual best list of the U18s.

In 2013 Gimmler was both German U18 winter throwing champion and German U18 champion . In her debut on the world stage, she came 10th at the U18 World Championships in Donetsk . With 65.91 meters, Gimmler once again led the German annual best list in the U18 age group.

In 2014 she won, now in the U20 class, at the German U20 Winter Throwing Championships and the German Youth Championships . Internationally, she finished 12th at the U20 World Championships in Eugene (Oregon) .

In 2015 Gimmler was again German U20 winter throwing champion and German U20 champion . With that she had won the seventh DM title in a row. She won bronze at the German U23 championships . She took a 7th place at the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna .

In 2016, Gimmler took 8th place in the individual ranking at the European Winter Throwing Cup in Arad (Romania) and 2nd place with the team. From the middle of the year there was a nine-month break due to injury.

In 2017 she won the European Winter Throwing Cup in Las Palmas with the team and came in 8th place in the individual ranking again. In other international appearances, Gimmler took 10th place at the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz and 13th place at the Summer Universiade in Taipei .

At the Halle Throwing Days on May 21, Gimmler set a new Saarland record in hammer throw with 65.64 meters and exceeded the old record from 2009 by 1.10 meters. At the beginning of June, she improved her personal best to 65.75 meters at the hammer throw meeting in Fränkisch-Crumbach .

Gimmler belongs to the B-team of the German Athletics Association (DLV) .

Club affiliations

Sophie Gimmler started for the LC Rehlingen in 2017 . At LAZ Saarbrücken , to which she joined in 2015, she, like several other top athletes, had been terminated at the end of 2016 because the club had taken over financially in the year of the Olympic Games . Her first club was LV Merzig until 2014 .
