Silvia Rieger

Silvia Sabine Rieger (born November 14, 1970 in Hinte bei Emden ) is a former German hurdler .

Her specialty was the 400 meter hurdles . In this discipline she was able to win at the European Championships in 1994 in 54.68 s silver behind Sally Gunnell and at the European Championships in 1998 in 54.45 s bronze behind Ionela Târlea and Tetjana Tereschtschuk-Antipowa . At the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg she was sixth in 55.01 s and eighth in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta in 54.57 s. In 1998 she became European champion in the 4 x 400 meter relay together with Anke Feller , Uta Rohländer and Grit Breuer .

As a teenager she was extremely successful. In 1987 and 1989 she was European junior champion over 400 meter hurdles and in 1988 she won bronze at the junior world championships. In the adult class she won six German championship titles in 1990 , 1993 and 1996 to 1999 . In the years in between, she was second behind her almost equally old rival Heike Meißner .

She started for TuS Eintracht Hinte until 1997 , then for SV Emden-Harsweg . She had to end her career in 2001 due to a protracted Achilles tendon injury that resulted in multiple operations. Then she began training as a physiotherapist. With a height of 1.75 m, she had a competition weight of 56 kg.

For her services to sport in Lower Saxony , she was included in the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History.
