Stefan Letzelter

Stefan Letzelter (born June 21, 1971 in Mainz ) is a former German athlete . In 1998 he won the German championship title over the 400 meters . After the end of his active career in 2000, he worked as a trainer for years and was a member of the NOK Presidium.

Career

As the son of Manfred Letzelter (former sprinter, including indoor world record over 200 meters in 1970) and Helga Letzelter (former high jumper), Stefan Letzelter's course was set for sport from birth. In 1987 Stefan Letzelter started competitive sports at USC Mainz .

Stefan Letzelter had his best year in 1998: at the German Championships in Berlin, he took the title in 46.49 seconds. At the European Championships in Budapest in the same year, he was just eliminated in the run-up. With the 4 x 400 meter relay (together with Klaus Ehrnsperger, Thomas Goller and Jens Dautzenberg ) it reached the final (sixth place).

In 1999, an injury to the Achilles tendon set him back. Although Stefan Letzelter returned to the track, he ended his career as a track and field athlete in 2000 after further minor injuries.

Trainer

Stefan Letzelter then trained numerous athletes at USC Mainz, including 100-meter runner Andreas Koch (southern German champion) and triple jumper Tobias Pöss (3rd place DM).

Volunteering

Even after the end of his career, Stefan Letzelter remained active for years - he held various positions on a voluntary basis: From 2002 to 2006, he was Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Board for Active Members of the German Sports Association (DSB). He was also a member of the Presidium of the National Olympic Committee (NOK).

Sports scientist

Letzelter studied sports science, political science and philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1990 . In 1996 he made a study visit to Point Loma University in the US state of California before continuing his studies in Mainz, which he completed in 1998 with a master's degree . In 2004, his doctoral thesis in sports science was accepted at the University of Mainz, the text was entitled “The sprint for youngsters: speed and acceleration, sprinting skills, step design; a comparison of faster and slower young women short distance runners with the world class women ”. He worked in part on research work with his father. Between 2009 and 2011, Letzelter worked as a teacher for special tasks at the University of Mainz, from 2013 to 2015 he held a professorship for sport and applied training science at the H: G University for Health & Sport, Technology & Art Institute for Sports Science at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover hired as a teacher for special tasks.
