Markus Rehm (born August 22, 1988 in Göppingen , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German athlete in disabled sports (formerly the starting class T / F44 , since January 1, 2018 class T64 ). He specializes in long jump and sprint courses.

career path

Markus Rehm is an orthopedic technician - master .

Athletic career

As a 14-year-old wakeboarder , he lost his right leg below the knee in an accident during wakeboard training (August 2003). Nevertheless, he quickly returned to the sport and was the German vice youth champion in wakeboarding in 2005. Then he devoted himself more to athletics and initially started for the TG Reichenbach u. In 2008 he moved to TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where Steffi Nerius has been his trainer ever since.

At the IWAS World Junior Games 2009, Rehm won the gold medal in the long jump and was fifth over 100 meters and sixth over 200 meters. A year later he repeated the title in the long jump and also won gold over 200 and silver over 100 meters. Rehm has been competing with the men since 2009. At the Paralympic World Cup he was second in the long jump, at the IWAS World Championships in Bangalore he won the title in the long jump with the European record of 6.75 meters, as well as with the 4 x 100 meter relay . In fourth place, he just missed another medal over 200 meters.

2011 defended Rehm in Christchurch his title at the IPC - world championships with world record distance of 7.09 meters. He just missed another medal in fourth place with the 4 x 100 meter relay, over 100 meters he was tenth.

In 2012 he first won the titles in the long jump and over 100 meters at the IPC European Championships in Stadskanaal . The high point of the season and career were the Paralympic Games in London this year . In the long jump he won ahead of his compatriot Wojtek Czyz and improved his own record length by 26 centimeters to 7.35 meters.

In 2013, Rehm was able to improve the world record in the long jump (disabled sports , class T / F 44) to 7.54 meters at the integrative sports festival in Leverkusen.

In 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Rehm won the long jump titles at the German Championships.

According to Rehm himself, like Oscar Pistorius before, his goal is to be able to compete in official competitions against "non-disabled" athletes. With the performances he has shown since 2012, this would be possible for him, for example, with his T44 world record distance of 7.95 meters, which he jumped at the IPC World Championships on July 24, 2013, he would have achieved the qualification standard for the 2013 German Athletics Championships of 7.65 meters and ranks third there mathematically.

On July 26, 2014, Rehm won the German championship for non-disabled athletes with a width of 8.24 meters. He beat the former European champion Christian Reif (8.20 meters) and improved his own Paralympics world record by 29 centimeters. The result was initially only valid with reservations, as it was to be clarified whether his prostheses would not give him any unauthorized advantage. On July 30, 2014, the German Athletics Association (DLV) decided that Rehm would not be allowed to participate in the 2014 European Athletics Championships . According to Association President Clemens Prokop , “there are“ clear doubts that jumps with a leg prosthesis and with a natural ankle are comparable. ”Measurements by the biomechanics showed that Rehm was significantly slower than other men in comparable 8-meter jumps and when approaching shortly before the jump he nevertheless achieved a higher vertical speed when jumping than Christian Reif. Rehm's trainer Steffi Nerius criticized the fact that the measurements had not been carried out earlier, but Markus Rehm was unable to perceive a measurement offered by the DLV three weeks before the championships. Rehm declined to take legal action against the non-nomination. The Federal Government's Commissioner for Disabilities, Verena Bentele , criticized the decision: "I would have liked it if the DLV had made a statement and seriously pushed inclusion ." In November, the DLV decided that Rehm would keep his title as long jump champion and may also start together with non-disabled athletes in the future, but will be rated separately from them. According to the investigations, an advantage given by the prosthesis is likely, but not absolutely certain.

In 2015, Rehm became world champion for the third time with the world record distance of 8.40 m.

In 2016 he was the standard bearer of the German Paralympics team in Rio de Janeiro . Because of his outstanding success (gold medal 4 times 100 m relay, the like in the long jump) at the Paralympics 2016, he was awarded the silver laurel leaf on November 1, 2016 .

In July 2017, Rehm won the gold medal with the 4 x 100 meter relay at the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in London after the US team was disqualified.

In 2018, Rehm won the title in the long jump in the T64 class as part of the German Indoor Championships . At the IPC European Championships in Berlin he won the long jump with a world record of 8.48 m and won gold with a championship record of 41.42 s in the 4 x 100 meter relay with Johannes Floors , Phil Grolla and Felix Streng .

In November 2019, Rehm won his fifth World Championship gold in a row at the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 8.17 m in the long jump.
