Athletic career

Schäfer grew up in Lilienthal and Gröpelingen and played football at the DFB base in Bremen when he was 12 . In 2010 he was diagnosed with "bone cancer" . As a result, his right lower leg and knee were amputated at the University Hospital in Münster in order to put a safe stop to the aggressive disease. During the rehab at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic , he had one wish as a patient and he wished to meet a Paralympic athlete. He was so impressed by these meetings that he decided to take up athletics.

Since 2012, Schäfer has been on the podium and winning titles internationally in his disciplines of high jump, long jump and sprint over 100 and 200 meters . In 2013 he set a high jump world record at the Junior World Championships in Puerto Rico with a height of 1.65 m. In 2015, Schäfer achieved 4th place in the long jump in his first participation in the adult class at the IPC World Championships . In 2016 he was nominated for the Paralympic Games . With personal bests, Schäfer came fourth in the long jump with 6.06 m and in 7th place in the 100-meter run in 13.16 s.

In July 2017, Léon Schäfer won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the World Championships in Athletics for the disabled in London after the US team was disqualified. Together with Tom Malutedi , Markus Rehm and Johannes Floors , he was awarded the Disabled Sports Team of the Year 2017 and he himself was named the young disabled athlete.
