David Behre (born September 13, 1986 in Duisburg ) is a German athlete specializing in sprint competitions in the T43 starting class . He is a world champion and participant in the Paralympics .
Personal
Behre suffered a serious accident on September 8, 2007 at the age of 20 in his hometown of Moers , in which he was hit by a train and both lower legs were severed. During his subsequent stay in hospital, he saw a television report about the sprinter Oscar Pistorius , who was also amputated below the knee , and from then on devoted himself to disabled sports .
Career
At the IWAS World Athletics Championships in Bangalore , India in 2009, Behre was among other things vice world champion in the sprint over 200 meters with a time of 24.56 s and world champion in the sprint relay over 4 x 100 meters. Two years later, he became the European record holder and runner-up in the 400 meter world championship in Christchurch, New Zealand . In his first Paralympics participation in August 2012, he won the bronze medal with the German sprint relay after the Brazilian and American sprint relay were disqualified after a substitution error and Germany moved from 5th to 3rd place. In 2013 he won the bronze medal over 200 meters at the World Championships in Lyon . Over 400 meters, he won the gold medal in 48.42 s at the 2015 World Championships in Qatar. At the Paralympic Games in Brazil in 2016 , Behre won the bronze medal over 200 meters, the silver medal over 400 meters and, in a team with Markus Rehm , Felix Streng , Johannes Floors, the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
For his sporting successes at the 2016 Paralympic Games, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 1, 2016 . Together with his relay colleagues, he was named Disabled Sports Team of the Year in 2016.
He is currently training at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen .
Others
David Behre is an accident ambassador for the ERGO insurance group and is committed to the inclusion of disabled people. He also acts as a motivational speaker and motivates people who have lost limbs in an accident. In November 2013 he published his biography Sprint back to life , in which he describes his experiences and provides insights into his life.
