Das Stade 5 Juillet 1962 ( German  Stadium of July 5, 1962 , Arabic ملعب 5 جويلية 1962), also known as the Mohamed Boudiaf Stadium or El Djezair Stadium , is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Algerian capital, Algiers . It was named in memory of Algeria's state independence from France , which took effect on July 5, 1962.

history

The stadium, which opened in 1972 and has hosted the home games of the MC Alger football club since 1984 , can accommodate 66,000 spectators after a renovation carried out in 2003. From July 13 to 28, 1978 the sports facility housed the III. Africa Games . In 2007 the facility was once again the location of the African sports games from July 11th to 23rd. In 1990 the facility - next to the Stade 19 May 1956 in Annaba - hosted the African Football Championship . A total of nine games were played in the stadium, including a semi-final, the game for third place and the final.

On September 21, 2013, an accident occurred in the stadium. Ten minutes before the end of the derby between MC Alger and USM Algier , part of the concrete floor on the upper tier of the main stand broke away. Two visitors fell through the resulting hole and died as a result. The next day, the authorities closed the stadium until the cause of the accident, such as overloading or dilapidated buildings, was clarified. In January 2014 it was announced that the stadium would undergo extensive renovation from summer 2014. This was completed in June 2015. Since then, the stadium has had full seating that holds 75,000 spectators.

Another renovation, in which the stadium is to be roofed, was planned for 2016.
