Wayne Collett
Wayne Collett ( Wayne Curtis Collett ; born October 20, 1949 in Los Angeles , † March 17, 2010 ibid) was an American sprinter .
In 1971 he was US runner-up over 440 yards .
The following year he became champion over 400 meters and qualified with the world best time of 44.1 s over this distance for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . With 44.80 s he won the silver medal there behind his compatriot Vince Matthews (44.66 s) and before the Kenyan Julius Sang (44.92 s). Because of their disrespectful behavior at the awards ceremony, which reflected the disappointment of the two African Americans with the conditions in their country at the time, Matthews and Collett were banned from the IOC so that the US team no longer had enough runners to take part in the 4-time- 400 meter relay to participate. However, he could continue to start for UCLA .
Wayne Collett graduated from UCLA in Los Angeles and later worked as a lawyer and in the real estate industry. At the age of 60, Collett died of cancer ; he left a wife and two children.
