Lewis Banda

Lewis Simon Banda (born September 16, 1982 in Tshabalwa ) is a Zimbabwean athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Career

Banda, who also played rugby on the side, was successful as a track and field athlete during his school days at Milton High School in Bulawayo . In 2001 he was second in the 400- and 200-meter run at the Junior African Athletics Championships in Réduit . In 2003 he began studying accounting at Arizona State University in Tempe, where he joined the Sun Devils team .

At the 2004 African Athletics Championships in Brazzaville, he won the gold medal with the Zimbabwean 4 x 400 meter relay . Shortly thereafter, he took part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and reached the semi-finals in the 400-meter run. At the 2006 African Athletics Championships in Bambous, he finished seventh over the same distance. In 2007 he won the bronze medal at the Pan-African Games in Algiers as the final runner in the 4 x 100 meter relay together with Ngonidzashe Makusha , Gabriel Mvumvure and Brian Dzingai . He also led the Zimbabwean 4-by-400-meter relay to a bronze medal there.

In the following years he could not build on earlier successes. In the 400-meter run, Banda retired from both the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2010 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha in the heats.
