Rudolf Bendemann

Rudolf Christian Eugen Bendemann (born November 11, 1851 in Dresden ; † May 3, 1884 in Pegli (today Genoa )) was a German history painter .

Life

Bendemann was the son of the history painter Eduard Bendemann and his wife Lida Schadow (1821–1895), the daughter of the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow . Admiral Felix von Bendemann was his brother.

Bendemann received his first artistic lessons from his father. In 1868 he became a student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , first in the elementary class of Andreas Müller , and from 1869 to 1870 in Karl Müller's hall of antiquities . He then worked in his father's studio and also became his father's assistant. In 1873 he was still studying art history with Wilhelm Roßmann .

Between 1877 and 1879 Bendemann lived and worked in Munich and then settled again in Düsseldorf. One of his first works was a scene from Esaias Tegnér's Frithjofssage . In collaboration with Wilhelm Beckmann , Ernst and Fritz Roeber , Bendemann was involved in decorating several halls of the National Gallery in Berlin under the direction of his father .

For health reasons, Bendemann traveled more and more to the south; mostly to Italy, but also to Egypt . There he came from genre and history painting to oriental painting . Rudolf Bendemann died on May 3, 1884 at the age of 32 in Pegli near Genoa.
