Pegli is a district in the western periphery of the Italian port city of Genoa .

The Pegli district includes the villages of Pegli , Castelluccio and Multedo as well as the settlements Granara and San Carlo di Cese , which are located in the Val Varenna . Together they have about 28,000 inhabitants. Since 2007 Pegli belongs to the Munizip VII Ponente .

Location description

Pegli is a once partly elegant place of residence approx. 15 km west of Genoa on the coast of the Liguria ponente . To the east joins the suburb of Multedo, from which it is separated by the River Varenna , whose valley was known for its paper mills . In the hinterland, the mountains of the Monte Penello group rise rapidly to over 1000 meters. The ancient port stretches for two kilometers along the coast, with a front from the palazzi facing the sea. Behind it, small alleys lead into the Borgo . The slopes are built on with numerous villas from the 19th and 20th centuries. Once a much-visited holiday resort on the coast due to its particularly mild climate, the city has suffered less from the industrialization of the coast than the neighboring villages and has still retained some of the charm of a tourist resort. The place is characterized by numerous painted palazzi, large parks and two museums. Pope Benedict XV was born in Pegli . and the songwriter Fabrizio De André (1940–1999, Via De Nicolay 12). Worth seeing are numerous noble villas from the 16th to 19th centuries, the Archaeological Museum, the Maritime Museum, which houses several medieval nautical maps of the Mediterranean on parchment, and also the cemetery near the archaeological museum. Typical foods from Pegli are the farinata, the panissa, the castagnaccio and the farinata di zucca.
