  • Under construction
  • In planning
  • The Autostrada A 10 ( Italian for 'motorway A 10'), also called Autostrada dei Fiori (Italian for 'motorway of flowers'), is an Italian motorway in Liguria (northern Italy ) that runs from Genoa along the coast of flowers via Savona and Imperia leads to Ventimiglia (border with France ). The six-kilometer section between the French state border and Ventimiglia is toll-free.

    history

The final route from Genoa to Savona was opened on September 5, 1967, as the directional carriageway to Genoa had already existed. The Savona - Ventimiglia line was opened to traffic on November 6, 1971.

Between Genoa and Savona, the motorway towards Ventimiglia has recently been extended to three lanes. The original lane in the direction of Genoa already had the appropriate width for three lanes, since before the opening in 1967 traffic had been conducted in both directions. It follows that the old carriageway in the direction of Genoa is much more “winding” than the opposite direction, comparable to the Genoa – Serravalle route (A 7).

After the collapse of the Ponte Morandi , the motorway between the junction of the A 7 and the Genoa Aeroporto junction was closed from August 14, 2018 to August 5, 2020.

    Course of the A 10

    Location and course

The motorway runs along the entire length of the Italian Riviera , past cities such as Genoa , Savona , Imperia and Ventimiglia . The northern directional carriageway (→ Ventimiglia) has three lanes between the A 26 near Genua- Voltri and Albisola , the southern directional carriageway (→ Genoa) between Varazze and the A 26. The remaining sections have four lanes, but most of the route lacks a hard shoulder.

Due to the mountainous terrain of the western Ligurian coast, the motorway has numerous tunnels and valley bridges on its route (see Viadotto Polcevera below).

The A 10 in the urban area of Genoa

The Autostrada dei Fiori begins at a junction with the A 7 in Genoa. On its way to the west, it first leads through the western suburbs of Genoa, such as Pegli and Voltri , before the two carriageways split. The north carriageway leads through the hinterland of the Riviera coast, while the south carriageway is close to the coast with some tight curves. In Voltri, the A 26 branches off to Gravellona Toce . As far as Albisola , the lanes are run separately from one another, from the junction they run parallel and you get to the port city of Savona . There is also a connection to Turin via the A 6 .

In Savona, the operating companies also change and the A 10 now leads to the border to Menton in a constant change of valley bridges and tunnels . It also crosses the westernmost provincial capital of Liguria , the city of Imperia . At the Italian / French border near Ventimiglia / Menton, the A 10 flows seamlessly into the French A 8 .

    The A 10 near Imperia

The A 10 can therefore also be divided into two parts, namely into the sections:

    • Genoa - Savona , operated by Autostrade per l'Italia , opened in 1967
    • Savona - Ventimiglia , operated by the Autostrada dei Fiori SpA , released in 1971

    connections

The A 10 has the following motorway junctions:

    Passante di Genova

Due to the high volume of traffic in the narrow urban area of Genoa, there are plans to relocate the existing motorway to the mountainous hinterland of Genoa. This major project is also known as Passante di Genova .

    Viadotto Polcevera

Collapse of Viadotto Polcevera / Ponte Morandi

An important construction of the route was the bridge over the Polcevera river and the valley of the same name. The Polcevera Viaduct was designed by Riccardo Morandi and opened to traffic in 1967 after four years of construction.

Before it collapsed, the bridge was 1,182 meters long, 45 meters high and was supported by three reinforced concrete pillars, each 90 meters high.

On August 14, 2018, a section of the bridge collapsed. 43 people were killed. After the remaining parts of the bridge had been demolished and the bridge was rebuilt under the name Genova San Giorgio , traffic on this section of the motorway was opened again on August 5, 2020.
