The Autostrada A6 ( Italian for 'Motorway A6'), also called La Verdemare ( Italian for ' Motorway of the Green Sea'), is an Italian motorway and runs in the north-west of the country from Turin to Savona . It connects the capital of Piedmont with the southern part of the region, especially the province of Cuneo and the Italian Riviera .
It is a total of 131 km long, with the exception of a short six-lane section near Turin, four-lane and fully toll road .
The A6 was built as a three-lane expressway until 1971. The middle lane served as an overtaking lane alternately in both directions. The 4-lane expansion began in 1973 and was completed in 2000. In the Ceva - Savona section, the motorway was re-routed. The old route is now used for traffic towards Savona. The opening of the sections in detail:
Ceva - Savona (today direction Savona) January 27, 1960
In 1971, public transport was excluded between the Carmagnola junction and the Rio Colore- West rest area , as the route was used by Fiat as a test route for high-speed tests.
On November 24, 2019, the Madonna del Monte viaduct collapsed near Altare near Savona (see also the list of bridge collapses ).
course
The A6 can be divided into two sections, the flatter part of the western Po Valley and the mountainous part down to Savona on the Mediterranean .
Turin - Cuneo (Piedmont)
The A6 starts south of Turin at Tangenziale Sud and runs in a fairly straight line past Carmagnola to east of Cuneo . It crosses the newly built A33 at Marene , which can also be used as a bypass for Turin in the direction of A21 Piacenza / Brescia , or another branch of the A33 leads in the direction of Cuneo.
Cuneo - Savona (Piedmont / Liguria)
The mountainous part of the A6 begins immediately after the Cuneo exit. First it goes to Ceva in the Tanaro valley parallel to the SS28. After Ceva, the road splits several times. It crosses the Colle di Cadibona (435 m) and thus also the watershed between the Ligurian Apennines and the Po Valley. The Millesimo exit can only be approached from the road in the direction of Savona, so two connecting pieces have been built to the other road. In numerous serpentines it then goes down to Savona, where the A6 meets the A10 .
Regional importance
The A6 is particularly important for the western part of Piedmont around the cities of Cuneo, Bra , Fossano and Mondovì as well as the access to the ski areas of the Maritime Alps . In interregional traffic, it is primarily a fast route between Turin and Genoa .
The feeder road from Fossano , or junction to Fossano, has traffic signs for the beginning and end of the motorway and is signposted in green, despite a single lane with one lane per direction of travel. In addition, there are additional boards at the feeder road that mark the road with the symbol of the A6 motorway. This motorway feeder is also classified as branch D06 according to the internal numbering of Autostrade per l'Italia .
The legislative decree of October 29, 1999 n. 461 classified this section of the road as a feeder road to the A6.
The feeder stretches over 6.1 km from the Fossano junction on the A6.
