List of bridge collapses
The list of bridge collapses includes events that have become known due to the size of the structure or serious consequences.
Causes of collapse
Possible causes are natural disasters, collisions with vehicles, construction errors, material defects, overloading, acts of sabotage or military influences. Bridge collapses are very rare occurrences today, as these structures usually have to be systematically monitored. However, there have been times and states when this was not the case. In the United States , collapsing railroad bridges were a relatively common occurrence at the end of the 19th century. In the period between 1878 and 1895, more than 500 such occurrences were recorded, which means that they happened more than every two weeks.
